Im not being educated though, thats the point. Im educating myself back in my room. How hard is that to fathom?

:dontknow:

University is all about educating yourself. The guidance and help available is there if you need it but essentially its all up to you.

What I don't understand about uni is that whilst unlike college and school, you have to pay an incredible amount for the privilege of the education, the education itself is actually a bit ****. You have less contact hours than you do in school and most of the work is done independently. They just tell you 'read this and do that' basically, and you do it. What are we paying for?

Btw, I'm on an arts course at Sheffield, I know this could differ slightly for say, Physics at Cambridge but for a vast number of degrees I think it's true.

This is why I will be doing an apprenticeship and making a reputation for myself as an audio engineer when I leave college. Quite frankly, I've been in education for my whole life and I'm getting pig sick of it. I want to get out into the real world and start earning a living.

Well, good on you :yep:. I feel kinda the same too. I got a bit tired of education after my bad experience of A Levels and decided I wanted to do more vocational stuff. Unfortunately, I've been finding it so difficult to secure an apprenticeship, as they seem to be just as hard to get as normal jobs :frown:. Failing that I might just go off and travel for a bit, since I hear that's another good way to have a great experience and find yourself.

So whats the point in university?

If its about self education?

Im spending £12,000 on tuition fees. I could save that £12,000, learn myself, invest in an online business, turn over profit, expand, etc etc. all in the same timescale and still self teach alongside developing new ideas and gaining more knowledge.

Only benefits i see of university

Social life
Contacts

If you already have both of them, university is a waste of time and money.

Exactly, it just feels like a waste of money. Im paying to educate myself which I could do at home for free.

I suppose I am paying for the actual having a degree which will give me good job prospects [or not as **** prospects anyway]. And there's the year out which is a good opportunity. But the studying itself...omg....

I'd like to travel too but the reality of it is that you need money to travel, and all of my friends are either in uni or have jobs (I dropped out after a year in sixth form because my school was crap) so it's not like they can up sticks and come travelling with me.

However I feel like I'm getting in debt myself in order to hope for better prospects. Im gambling on myself.

When I could just drop out and take a safe investment by getting an apprenticeship and make profit.

Well I went to university for the brand of the university to be on my CV and show that I can I study for 3 years gaining a recognised grade.

Sure its not great if you want to go on and start your own business after graduating.

Its an experience though....there is a lot to it, but the actual knowledge gaining side, its mostly self education. When you pay £12k they won't implant the knowledge for you.
This is the thing, was it 10yrs ago or something like that when university was free, my friends sister went and said they were taught properly and it was good....even at mine, then suddenly we have to pay 3k and the government stopped funding the universities partially, poorer standards, now next yr full 9k i think no funding off government, i fear next yr its gunna be much worse, prob sit down and told read a book or go to the job center

The fact that you got into university studying computing portrays a lot of skill and intelligence. If I were you I would stay at Uni and finish the course, as dropping out would be even worse than not even thinking about Uni in the first place. I would use the skills I learn and implement this in the real world, and use the knowledge you learn to think of inovative ideas. You will only gain skills from Uni and money comes and goes, but you don't want to reflect back to your life at old age and regret not experiencing Uni. I also assume that it's your first year, so I'd say, try to tolerate it for a couple of more months before making any hasty decisions. Besides lessons are never very helpful for me either and I do most of my studying at home, but they provide me with a base on what to work around at home, and I get a guide on what to read up on.

Hmmm...i would've thought programming is the easiest out of them, with maths or algorithm being the hardest. But I guess if you've never done programming (assuming you haven't), then it would seem like a mind-fudge at first . Maybe the difficult bits come later on in your course, i dunno are you a first year student?

btw did you have a strong interest in computing beforehand and do you still have it?

Its just getting in debt in return for a piece of paper, i don't think i'll actually learn something useful to get myself a job and if i do get employed i'll have to be retaught stuff and then

it'll be

sacked for not fitting job requirements or;
being retaught everything

I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea though, but I would just go travelling on my own, and hopefully meet some people along the way. I don't have money of my own either, but I'll maybe just save up some JSA (that's if and when they eventually send it to me - it's taking an age!). I could also maybe borrow some money from my parents, and then do a working holiday so that I'm eventually earning to fund my travels myself. I dunno how well this would work but I might go talk to STA Travel about it and see what they say.

I don't really care about his subconscious, that's hardly a crime really is it? I also think people need to learn that there are harsh realities, like losing, people being better than you etc.

No... this way of thinking stopped being valid a long time ago. In an organized society such as ours, losing, or knowing that people are better than you is NOT an issue.

From one perspective, you can say that it's the one thing that gives you goals in life, in comparison to what it meant when we were unorganized, and achieving Alpha status made the difference between life and death.

Tell me this, why would you care if someone is better than you, AT the moment ? Why does it matter ? You should focus on making the biggest contribution you can towards society, and , who knows, you may revolutionize the world.

Recognition is just an effect of making a useful contribution. One should seek making a contribution, rather than achieving recognition.
If you wanna see the quality difference in universities sit through a lecture and tutorials then watch a oxford or MIT lecture on youtube and look at the difference, they are getting taught properly in away you get....
