How much work at home is TOO much at year 11?

hey guys,

im 14 and in year 11 at school, and im finding the amount of work i have to do at home really really stressful. im falling alseep in classes and am very nearly almost dozing off on the bus journey home. i constantly feel exhausted and i dont even know why. i dont know if i eat enough. let me give you a run-down on my school day and please tell me if theres anything i can do to limit the stress. :/ also, how much homework do you think is simply too much?

wake up at 6,
get ready to leave the house for 7am sharp (i barely have time to eat breakfast, maybe a rice cake or a few pieces of bread or an apple),
get on bus at 7:30 (i get a car lift to the bus stop),
get to school at 8:10
do some homework in common room until 8:30
lessons from 8:45-4pm,
get on first bus at 4:30pm and take another bus and then walk till i get home at 6pm,
6-7pm i get in, relax a bit, work on my website, eat something,
7pm-11pm i do continuous homework for school
11pm have a shower
1:15-2am homework.
6am wake up.

a couple of nights ago i went to bed at 3am, and also once 4am. im considering pulling some all nighters just to get this work done. and my parents are getting so angry with me because im always stressed out and dont sleep enough,... apparently.

as i said above, i eat maybe a rice cake or two, OR a couple of pieces of bread, OR an apple before i leave home in the mornings.

at morning break i usually spend money in canteen and buy a small chocolate crepe

lunch- school meals, but they are VERY small portions and we cant get more. private school. messed up.

at maybe 6:30 i drink some juice and eat a small home-cooked meal for dinner. i usually drink water constantly throughout the day to keep me awake and every other day maybe i have a coffee at home in the evening.

i have no trouble sleeping, obviously. i can go to sleep without needing to think about it sadly. :frown: and i get 4 hours of sleep usually!!! i often fall asleep unwillingly because i get super tired and just collapse. ive fallen asleep 30 mins in one class recently.. and teachers have apparently complained the the head that im always tired.

but i cant sleep more! it is literally impossible! im falling behind in my art and i have an exam in two weeks and im not even a quarter of the way through my sketchbook and im worried about my french writing exam next week because ive only been doing french for one year and a bit! and 3 english controlled assessments, a science exam and geography, ICT coursework, and 26 more exams before the end of the year! 11 gcses im doing including triple science. :frown: and my dad tells me "if you WANT to get those good grades you have to do minimum 3-5 hrs a night of work!" and im already doing that, but im falling majorly behind. i am NEVER productive in my art lessons, i find it really hard because of the deadlines and pressure, and im meant to be really good at art!

My sister spends a huge amount of time doing her art coursework/homework, but 4 hours of sleep per night is absurd, I think 5+ hours is a little excessive considering you haven't any major exams until the summer. I can remember being told that I should aim to do 5 hours per week per subject (totalling about 3 hours per night), but that's at A-level where the workload is higher. Maybe it's because you go to a private school...
14 and in year 11? o.O

It sounds to me like you're basing the amount of homework you do on how long it takes - i.e. if you haven't done 3-4 hours then you haven't done enough. When you say homework do you mean assignments set by your teachers or your own private revision?

What subjects are you doing for GCSE that require so much homework?

And why are you in year 11 when you're 14?

Unless it's coursework, revision or preparation then it sounds pretty excessive. I don't actually get that much homework, then again I refuse to spend more than ten minutes on anything that doesn't benefit my grades in anyway, like some teachers set pointless homework just to look good. -.-

I'd start by prioritizing subjects and tasks. If it's revision for exams, then start revising for the one that's closest and forget about the others until nearer the time. If you try taking too much information in at once then you'll get stressed out and start forgetting things. Same with preparation. Never fall behind with coursework, if you miss a lesson or you find yourself falling behind then ask the teacher if you can come back some time to catch up.

I don't really know why you have so much, then again I don't go to a private school.

....but there aren't even any exams until next year, the main block of which are in the summer! If you're not coping with GCSE work (4 hours of sleep a night is ridiculous), you might have a breakdown when you start A levels. I think you need to lower your personal expectations, especially if you have to work this hard and push yourself so much just for GCSE courses.
What now, I'm turning 15 next month and am only in Year 10...
You can't be 14 and in Year 11...
It sounds like you're finding year 11 really hard. You have a really long day , so i don't think late nights are a good idea. When you get home you should chill for about half an hour then do your homework. Personally i like to spend about 20 minutes work just going through things i've done in the lesson (per subject). And then if i was you spend about 20 minutes on Biology, Chemistry and Phsyics. Triple is allot of work! I would say about 2 hours a day for you, but you should do 1 hour then have a break and then do your second hour. You just need to be time efficent and think about realistically how much work you can do. Other people may spend more time, but it seems you hardly have any time to yourself which is why you're so stressed.

Hope that helped! Good luck. If you fancy a chat about anything just message me because i understand what your saying !

 Sounds like you either have ridiculously pushy parents, goto a ridiculously pushy school or both.

Education is like a ladder, you're pretty near the bottom atm, and if this is the amount of work you need to do to get up to the next level you're actually going to kill yourself at A-Level/Degree...

Seriously, relax. You don't need to do 5 hours a day to get good grades at GCSE, just keep ontop of what you learn in class and do your homework, and do a bit of revision around April and you'll be fine.

Seriously... what kind o horrible stressed out life are you setting yourself up for i you're working this hard when you don't even have to.

Stop, now.

If I were you I'd take a week of work immediately and evaluate my situation. Don't burn out in year 11...

Seriously...take is easy. :K:

There's your problem. The thing is that if you have four hours of sleep, you'll have a crap night and will fall asleep in class (which you have been doing), and therefore you'll fall behind, leading to more problems with work and having to catch up. I'd recommend that you cut out a lot of the work you're doing - evaluate what's most important, and cut the less important stuff out. Try and get more sleep.
You could also try moving some work into the weekends.
Try talking to your teachers about your circumstances and asking for their advice.
I suspect the depression is due to the lack of sleep.

thats the amount of time u shuld use for A levels nut gcses. Gcses are a walk in the park, only revised 2 weeks before the exam for science and a day before the exams of other subject and got 5 As. Ur just unecessarily overworking yourself
(edited 13 years ago)
He might have skipped a year, that's not the issue.

OP, you sound like you're panicking. Not a good thing to do when you're worn out and stressed out. I do feel sorry for you, poor thing!
You really need to cut down on the amount of work you do. Probably you're not being efficient enough because you're too tired or too stressed or not fed well enough. I can't imagine having to do three hours of work a night for GCSE. Are you making a plan? What do you do on weekends? Can you have a convenient sick day soon (like Friday, to make a three day weekend) to catch up and start with a clean slate?

If you really are 14 and in Year 11, you'll have been moved up because you can handle it...prioritise, make lists, get to bed on time! Good luck!

I'm not saying you shouldn't revise at all, but depending on your subjects, at GCSE you don't have to do a lot of work. You should start revising properly 1-2 months before the exams. I'm guessing you have exams in January? If so, then revise for those exams now, but not too much so that you're straining yourself.

You seem over worked, so just cut down your workload. If you feel you're falling behind, have a word with your teachers and they should help you out.

Well, I was 14 in year 11.

Moved up a year (missed out year 3).

So it can be done.

Side note- this was not because of intelligence may I point about before I get attacked for 'boasting about my intellect'! There is a confusing back story behind it.
