And when I say locals im referring to guys like those who beat up Richards friend in an assault one week ago near prebends bridge. 3 of them just beat the hell out of him, for what I understand was no reason.

Haha… 'when I say locals'… so when you say 'locals', you only mean those residents of durham who behave unpleasantly? Meaning that nice residents cannot be 'local' at all?

And Ali's right, you get drunk violence everywhere… A similar thing happened to a friend of mine who goes to uni in Bangor(welsh thugs! Ooo…) And a friend back on the homely Isle of Wight got beaten up in Yates' with no provocation. Your Durham-bashing irks me… and frankly strikes me as immature. I've never gotten a bad impression from the people round here.
I think that Robbie needs to replace his "Locals" with "Yokels" and there'd be a lot less confusion. Palatinate, dirty rag that it is, can be found in DSU or chemcafe or various other places around the uni.

All I say is that I speak from experience. Going out on a given Saturday in Chelmsford, in my experiences, seems to provoke far less hostility from the general public than going out on said given Saturday in Durham's town.

I was even told by my fresher mum to try not to go into town on weekends, because then its 'their' town, referring to the Durham older generation. I think thats ridiculous.
Then again, Robbie, I guess you've never been to TALK in Southend, or to the Minerva or Chinnery's. You'd have to watch out for 'locals' there too. I certainly wouldn't go down the seafront after dark, and I've lived there for 20 years. If I'm perfectly honest, I've never had any trouble from 'locals' (in Durham), and unless you reply to the 15 year old chav/charver/pikey/townie/whatever hanging around in a shop doorway at 9pm on a Friday making facetious comments at students, then you're not going to get started on. The whole town is awash with CCTV cameras and there's police everywhere. I honestly don't think that there's trouble unless you go looking for it.

I dont know, this whole thing seems very suspect to our own experiences of Durham and at home. I guess it just varies naturally, and I seem to have seen the worse end of the spectrum.
