The Student Room Group

Eyesight

I was walking along King's Parade- a very wide, open stretch of road- at 8 am today and it was virtually deserted. I saw some figures calling out Bret from the other side of the road about 50 yards down. As Jamie is a common name and nobody would dream of me being up at that time (I am a politics student) I ignored it. It was only when they were right upon me, I mean 5 metres maximum, that i realized it was some of my best friends.

I was asked by my optician to wear glasses this summer and have been using them when I go shooting. But it's never been that bad in normal life. I wasn't hungover, neither was I particularly tired- just a bit stressed out from graduate applications. It was a bit embarrasssing, but it's more the deterioration I'm worried about. I have family members who are blind, although they are a couple of generations removed.

Can I do anything concrete to stop my eyesight going or am I at God's mercy?

Get glasses is the only 'scientifically' proven solution. And is the easier thing to do.

However, if you really care about your eyes, and want to look for alternative methods for preventing eyesight deterioration, check out 'Bates Method' online. However, it isnt much scientific theory, but I am sure it works.

Im nearly 15, and my eyes are terrible, I can be classified as a high myope (-6.00+). This sucks. I hope to prevent other people from reaching my position.

Cheers

get laser treatment..
or not.. as you are a student and probably can't afford it lol.

I'm wearing glasses tonight to go to a nightclub, which is strange for me. Do you think wearing them will appease the blindness as it were, and as my eyes become use to it, they get gradually more lazy. Surely when you tame an illness rather than fight it, it just gets the better in the end. If you take too many anti-biotics for example, you end up having a defficient immune system (I think). I know this isn't exactly explained in nobel science, but would wearing glasses ultimately exacerbate the problem.

Carrots contain a special type of vitamin which (according to tests) improve eyesight greatly if taken regularly. I suggest you try that it MIGHT work....if not invest in some glasses/contact lenses

carrots make you see in the dark. My mom told me that, but isn't it just that; an old wife's tail??

I don't doubt it, I just thought I would get that out of the way early as it was only a matter of time before it came up!

My eyesight seems to have deteriorated since I've been at Uni, it used to be perfect but I think spending so much time reading and staring at the goddamn computer screen has taken its toll. I've never had an eye test in my life, so I think now is the time...

Laser surgery is when they cut the top layer of your cornea so that the light that enters the eye, doesnt get bent in as much, so when it passes though the lens, the image formed on the back of the retina is focussed on one point- clear vision.

Cost - approx £1000 for both eyes total

However, it is not worth it if your eyesight isnt that bad - maybe get it if you are a moderate myope (-3.00) or a high myope (-6.00). Otherwise, just resort to glasses. It is not proved to be safe and your eyesight isnt perfect, it deteriorates a lot at night. Also you still see floaters and also sometimes double vision and other rubbish. So not recommended.

If you feel that your vision is OK during the day, but the main problem is during the night, where you can see nothing at all - eat carrots or fish liver oil capsules. They contain Vitamin A, which helps to regenrate the cones or the rods (forgot which one) in your retina which are senstive to light - making you see clearer in the dark.

The whole "eating carrots will fix your eyes" thing is, unfortunately, a load of rubbish. Just wear glasses or lenses.

No, I don't think it would. If you're straining to see things and so on, then that's putting more stress on your eyes than looking through glasses/lenses where everything is corrected to the right degree. It's not the same as the antibiotics analogy.

If you do feel your sight is deteriorating, then regular visits (6 monthly) to the opticians will help you keep control of it. I'd stay away from laser surgery until you're properly diagnosed and your eyes have settled to a certain prescription.

When I started to wear glasses, I refused to wear them, but now that I have contact lenses, my eyesight hasn't changed in a year. Before, when I was not wearing any glasses or vision aid, I was getting much worse every month, and listen to people when they tell you to wear your glasses all the time, even though you think you might not need it. Don't make the same mistake I made! Fortunately my eyesight isn't bad now, and trust me when I say that your eyesight will deteriorate at a much faster rate if you don't wear glasses/ contact lenses.
I think you might be self conscious wearing glasses, but don't be, you'll get used to them, and you can always wear contact lenses if you have the money.... but just wear them!
