If you're quiet I would totally avoid Richardson Road. Chose Ricky because it was the cheapest, though I'm realising now that paying some extra money each week probably would have been a minor inconvenience. I'm a bit shy and so I don't really get along with the party atmosphere and flatmates are sometimes annoying (thought from what I hear, I got some of the best flatmates). Also toilet keeps getting blocked, had several overflows. Also flatmates make a total mess when they're drunk, and we've had a PS3 battered from drunken behaviour. But if you like partying, can cook (or at least, be willing to lean to cook) and want cheap accod Ricky Road isn't that bad.

Another niggling thing is that you can't have overnight guests. Though everyone seems to ignore that anyway.

I moved into ricky road late into the first semester and I've had to leave already from the lack of sleep I was getting haha. Those little fire door things between rooms drove me mad too, I could hear everything going on in the guy's room next to me (he'd play the same few songs on repeat literally 20 times a day, it drove me insane).

Leazes is probably not much better, it's horrible. I'm in Windsor Terrace, which is pretty brilliant, but it fills up quickly as it's a popular one. I was unconditional so I knew I was in with a good chance, if you're not I would choose somewhere further out like St. Mary's over Leazes (and Ricky Road if you like peace and quiet) any day.

Sorry if this is hijacking the thread, but I don't see the point creating another accomm thread. When do we actually apply for Newcastle accommodation? The accommodation brochure is pretty unclear as it says you should apply as soon as you receive an offer, is this true or is it some sort of misprint as I would have thought you applied to accommodation after you firm Newcastle? Finally, is Newcastle's accommodation allocated on a first come first serve basis, or does it go into a ballot of some sort?

First come first served. Don't apply late or you'll share a bedroom like I had to. Only temp and it wasn't that bad but still not ideal and very awkward,

Don't worry. I didn't apply until after my birthday (13th March) and I still got my first choice of accod. But still apply earlier! You can always cancel your application for accod if you decide you're not going!
Hey guys. I think my main choices are Castle Court, St Mary's and Windsor Terrace - can anyone weigh them up for me? Ideally I'd like en-suite, but I'm willing to forgo it for costs, but St Mary's seems quite far out... can anyone shed some light on there for me?

Yeah I appreciate that :smile:. Would you recommend Central Link overall?

I think I'm ideally looking for a halls which isn't completely party central (like ricky road) but one where I can do work in peace but not be completely dead in the fact that people will go and socialise. Is that what Central Link is like, or is it quiet like Victoria Halls where I've been told people never go out.

I know exactly what you mean! I'm all for a good night out but my main concerns are making friends and still being able to get some work done and to have at least a little quiet time so ricky road is definitely not the place for me! I'm also thinking of putting central link as my first choice as the rooms seem really nice and I think that everyone will have a chance to get to know each other as long as people make the effort :smile:
Oh, does anyone know anything about this courtesy bus from St Mary's College to campus? In the morning and after lectures? It could be a massive deciding factor in my decision!

Yeahh. Ricky Road doesn't appeal at all, and it's a shame Windsor Terrace is pretty much impossible unless you're a gap year. I think I've decided by accommodation choices now though;

Central-Link
Windsor Terrace
Victoria Hall/Castle Court.

Windsor Terrace
St Marys
Marris House.

Probably going to firm Newcastle next Wednesday after I've visited QMUL!
Just to let everyone know, they've updated their website with all of the prices and details for this year (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/accommodation/students/accommodation/) .

I was in Ricky Road up until December, but suspended my studies because I didn't like my course, so if anyone has any questions about Ricky Road or halls in general just ask :smile: . I'm going back this year, on a different course, and will be going back in to halls - hopefully Ricky again.

In terms of the accommodation, I know that Windsor Terrace and Marris House are very popular, and most people in those took a gap year, so were top of the list - It's difficult to get in those two if you are just going straight from College, but worth a try! I believe Castle Court and Victoria Halls are also popular.

I, like many people on here, was put off by Ricky Road because of its reputation, so I applied to others, but ended up there. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected - my room was bigger than expected, and room sizes are generally ok, although some have quite a few walls! In terms of the atmosphere, it is quite loud, and people do generally go out quite a few times a week, so if you're not really into going out, or have difficulty sleeping, you can be awoken in the early hours when people come back from nights out, which is good if you're going out, but if you just fancied staying in and catching up on sleep, or didn't like going out, you might get annoyed, but I suppose that entirely depends on what your flatmates are like, which is somewhat of a lottery. The buldings do look a bit grim, but it's warm, and conveniently located - the medical school is literally next to it, and the main uni campus is less than a 10 minute walk, with the centre of Newcastle just off campus.

To sum up Ricky Road, I'd say that it has a good location, and is quite basic - you share wash facilities and there is one toilet between 6, but there was never really a queue for the shower, as people have lectures at different times. Despite this, I'd say it does live up to its 'party' reputation, but the extent of that will entirely depend on what your flat/block mates are like. The interior is a bit dated, but it's clean and warm. I think you get what you pay for with halls really - Windsor and Marris are more expensive, but it's still a lottery in terms of what your flatmates are like.

I hope this has been of help :smile:

Just to add to the above post. For some reason people who haven't firmed/insured Newcastle can still apply for accommodation. So even if you haven't made up your mind yet, apply now.

Can u please, please ensure me about when can we start applying for the accommodation? According to their website we should do it as soon as we receive an offer from them or is it starting in March? I still haven't received an offer yet and I fear that the places I want will fill up before I can even apply to. Thanks! :]

I recieved the email with the link yesterday, and applied straight away, but I'm on a gap year so effectively have an unconditional offer (didn't have to wait for an offer). I wouldn't worry though because if you haven't had an offer yet then there will be other people that won't have either, so you won't be at a disadvantage. I'd advise you to just apply as soon as possible, i.e when you get your offer.

Which halls are you looking to get into by the way?

I was thinking about central link or castle court. My problem is that the uni is still investigating into my student status: either UK/EU or International or the special case so that's why I still haven't received the offer but they told me that I got it nevertheless, just checking the status. It's kind of frustrating this waiting when u know that other people started applying for accommodation already :{

I have an unconditional offer from Newcastle, but I don't know if I'm going there because I'm waiting to see on my other choices. Do I apply as soon as I get the email or wait do you reckon?

There's no harm in applying even if you don't know if you're going yet. Applying dosen't tie you into anything - Even if Newcastle is just your insurance you can still apply for accomodation just in case if your plans change.

It's still very early in the application cycle - it must have only opened yesterday, and there's loads of people who haven't had offers yet, according to the 'Newcastle Applicants 2012' thread. There's still plenty of time :smile: . Just apply as soon as you can.
