14 year old looking for Saturday job

Hey,

I'm a 14 year old girl looking for a saturday job - any job apart from working at a fast food restaurant. I think it would be good experience and would given me a competitive edge over others.

I have been trying for jobs and have been turned down. Please do you have any advice?

Most places won't employ you until you're 16. At least that's how it was where I grew up.
There's only really paper rounds and maybe sweeping up hair at a local salon.

babysitting, newsagents, paper rounds, you need to be 16 to work in retail or restaurants thats probably why you got rejected cause your still at school.

A bit pointless, its pretty damn difficult finding a job other than paper-round at that age and even if you do somehow convince someone to employ you they will most definitely pay less than minimum wage because of your age - You'd probably be more productive working on doing well at school than earning £4/h

ask around on your local high street?

have you tried looking for a paper round or something like that?

my sister also became an Avon rep. when she was 14... you have to put all the documents in an adult's name but it can be a really good job as you can fit it in around your schooling.

although some shops only take 16+ people on... or that's my experience towards it!

paper round.

I know you want to work, but you just won't find anybody (I mean large companies in retail young people tend to work for) who'll employ you until you're 16, and even then, it can be difficult for anybody to give you a chance until you are school leaving age.

Isn't that sort of lying then?

Yeah, for most jobs you need to be 16. The only stuff I know of is paper rounds and stuff you can get your parents friends to pay you for, like babysitting, mowing the lawn etc.
As others have said, you're quite restricted due to your age.

It's highly unlikely you'll get a job working in retail or restaurants but you could try going for a paper round.
Thanks for the replies, guys!
No paper rounds near where I live :frown:
And I don't mind if I get paid little - it's for the experience too
What about waitressing jobs?

most places (at least where i live) tend to want waitresses who have some experience/are over 16.

like others have said, you'd be better off looking for an 'informal' job, one that perhaps isnt as high paying but isnt as official either - babysitting, dog walking, paper rounds etc.

edit: also as the person above me has said - if you just want experience, volunteering would be really good for you to do (especially if you want to do a vocational course in the future and can get it in that area)

The pub I work at employed me when I was 14 to do washing up etc. they then put me on waiting for a bit, so i think it's possible to work in a restaurant at 14, but perhaps not large chains like Pizza Hut... That said, my old boss never really did like to follow the law XD
I tried volunteering at law firms (because that's the career that I'd like to go in) but was not accepted :frown: I'll look for that and the Avon job.
I'm currently doing 'informal' jobs for family

no, you get a visit from a local area rep. who meets you and your parent to make sure you understand what it entails etc. no lying involved

I have seen waiters/waitresses near where I live who seem to be under the age of 16, youngest looked about 12. Volunteering is always a good though, I was part of my school's community action project in year 10 and 11 which involved a lot of that. Charity shops would always be glad to have you, I think. What is it about the experience that you want, may I ask?

Thanks! I'll try charity shops too
The experience I would like is working in any job, so that when I get a job relating to what I want to do, I have a reference (to say if I am enthusiastic, punctual, etc) to help.. If that makes sense.

Also there are some slightly more 'out there' ways of making money, such as if you are into music you could try your hand at DJing, as somebody from my school did. Is there anything which particularly interests you, like a hobby, which would be possible to exploit to make money with off your own back?
