Transferring to Durham in second year - help!

Hi, I'm at Durham now (first year) and a close friend of mine is at Birmigham Uni. She is in her second year and really hates it - hasnt made that many friends and isn't enjoying her course (business studies and german).

Basically she really wants to transfer to Durham next year as a second year student but isn't exactly sure how to go about doing so. She has spoken to a couple of admissions people who say she would still have to go through UCAS, but wasnt the deadline mid-January? And why UCAS as she's not applying as a first year anyway?

Also, would anybody know of a good person to chat to about this sort of thing? She's talking to the head of admissions, but would it be a better idea to talk to the head to the modern languages department (she would probably take german and another language), or maybe even a particular college? I know of two people doing modern languages in my year who have dropped out of the uni, so shouldnt there be at least two 'spare' places she could take up..?

She would really like to come here and any advice about her situation would be really appreciated! Oh and also, which courses are less subscribed to, as maybe that would be an easier way for her to get in...

Thanks guys!

Your friend is best talking to the admissions tutor for the new course she wants to do, they'll look at her A Levels etc and compare her syllabus at Birmingham and Durham. You normally still apply through ucas to transfer, there's somewhere in the application where you put the year of entry you'd like to go into. The deadline has past which means Durham don't have to look at her application but if she explains her situation to the subject admissions tutor I'm sure they'll consider her.
Good luck.
It'd probably be easier for her to drop out of Birmingham completely and just restart at Durham. Get a job for a few months, or go travelling or something...
