Is Southampton University in the middle of a council estate?

Well, is it?

A couple of months since by return from Southampton, by Dad commented how the university (i.e. the Highfield Campus) is situated in the middle of a council estate. Yet having visited the university twice, I hadnt noticed this, so is my Dad just getting confused in his old age, or is this actually true?^o)

Ummm, i think there is one next to it but i have never noticed it. You also need to consider that the highfield campus has thousands of studends going in and out all the time so your inevitebly only going to really run into students. The other thing you have to understand about any univsity if that in general if they are relatively central to the city it situated in you are more likely to be closer to council estates. Have a look at the burgess model if it helps. However its absolutly nothing to wory about.
Glen Eyre Hall/Bencraft Hall is next to the Flower estate which is a bit..dodgy but you don't really spend time going through it, atleast not if you're at Glen and there's a bus to Bencraft. It's fine.
Amusingly Highfield is a posh bit of southampton. If you head on down to portswood it's typical studenty housing. I wouldn't say it's a housing estate. There are some nearby though. This is also why you don't take parents to open days! Mine didn't see the university until i moved in in freshers week!

I lived at Bencraft and it was fine. I walked through the Flowers estate a few times on my own and never had a problem, although it was mainly quite early in the morning.

There are a couple of Council Estates near the University (Flowers Estate and also around Broadlands road) however a large proportion of these are now filled with Student Housing and arn't particularly bad. I've often walked through both areas and have known and still know people that live in them.

no it is not in the middle of a council estate. There is a council estate on Burgess Road which the university is off of. Most students would never need to go that way. Unless you are in Wessex Lane halls and then you will be on a bus! lol!
It is next to the Flowers estate, and if you live in Bencraft/Glen then you'll hear all the stories about how rough it is but in reality the stories are a collection of events that have happened over the last 10+ years, exagerated beyond recognition. It's not the roughest estate by far, and on the whole the uni is situated in a very middle class part of the city.
