Top Engineering Universities

I just used timesonline university and subject guide to work out the best uni's for engineering and came up with this as my top ten:

1.

Imperial

2.

Cambridge

3.

Nottingham

4.

Southampton

5.

Bristol

6.

Bath

7.

Loughburough

8.

Sheffield

9.

Cardiff

10.

UCL

I did this without any consideration of where actually is good and I just want to test my way of working it out with your opinions, see if the process is sound.

so basically, is this a good top ten list of places to go for engineering?
Thanks

Yup, some pretty sound places there. Now slim them down based on location, your perceptions, etc

Depends on the type of engineering, for instance Chemical Engr.
1 Imperial
2 Cambridge
3 Bath.
Isn't U of Oxford good for General Engineering??

UpliftMof0, as Manifest has also said, the ranking for Engineering always vary according to the type of Engineering you choose to study in.

For instance, the Time's Good University Guide produced the top-ten ranking for Civil Engineering in 2005 as follows:

1. Cardiff
2. Swansea
3. Queens, Belfast
4. Bristol
5. Nottingham
6. Bath
7. Imperial College
8. Manchester
9. Liverpool
10. Surrey

I looked at: Nottingham, Loughborough, Manchester, Warwick, Liverpool, and Leeds.
- Then applied to Nottingham and Loughborough, and could have gone to eather. (i got places in both, btu picked lufbra as prefrence)

There all good uni's, i really liked nottingham and manchester a lot, as warwich too.
- Manchester was in the middle of merging, and i think that put me off a bit.
- Liverpool said again and again how there coause was "proper" and "very much theoritically based" which is no what i wanted.
- And Warwick didnt really feel right.

Nottingham was amazing, and i ace'ed the interview, and would have loved to go there. But Loughborough clinched it, espcially after the second openday at each.
- The main thing was it seamed to be the most practical/hands on couarse, which is what i wanted, and what i beleave a lot of companys want.
- And speaking to people who i know who imploy engineers, including my uncal, they say that they would loughborough very highly indeed. (along with nottingham, and manchester, and the others, but very highly)

I really really love it here, and im sure i made the right choice.
- This may also be to do with fact ive watched one of my best friends go though a really hard time at nottingham and dropout after 16 weeks of going home and crying every w/end. (shes very clever, freindly, and extreamly persistant! but hated it.)

Also, you spelt lufbra wrong. Its Loughborough!!
I'm actually looking at Nottingham and Manchester...:P Imperial is mad expensive for me.

Yeah, there both great uni's, i liked both of them a lot. Just prefered lufbra!
Bath, blatantly.

i say imperial without any hesitation cos its got reputation and when i visited it had that world class feeling (if u know what i mean). it also needs the world class grades to actually get in with!

something's gotta give for the reputation! & as it seems, in case of imperial, its student life!
the students of imperial are stereotyped as geeks & a lot of them are really!:p:
& about world class grades? well both bath & imperial require the same grades for most engineering subs. In fact bristol requires AAA for MEng Mech Eng as opposing to imperial or bath's AAB for the same sub. & rumors are that bath is going to raise the required grades to AAA from next year!

but you are going to be in LONDON if you study at imperial.if that makes you very proud of course!

I had to choose between Mech. Eng at Imperial and General Engineering at Oxford, I visited both, spoke to students at both and went for Oxford. It seemed a much better fit, plus it allows me to do Engineering, Economics & Management, which helps jump into upper level engineering jobs a lot quicker  .

I must say the Cambridge Engineering course seems superior to Oxford's.

And I must say it didn't to me. Besides, Engineering, Economics & Management is one of Oxford's most prestigous and rigorous degrees.

In the automotive world: Loughborough. That's all I ever flipping here from main experienced vehicle specialists.

for chemical engineering i'd say imperial, ucl and manchester.

Loughborough shines for getting graduates into things like standard road car design. But other universities are good in related fields, a lot of the top engine people and most of the people in motorsports are from Oxford (a little due to its proximity to the racing capital of England) .

Very true! Oxford's the capital for motorsports in UK & some even say it's the home of F1 automotive companies because there are quite a lot of top team bases in or around Oxford.
It's because of this reason I applied to Oxford Brookes -- which is ranking wise a lot worse than the already established unis (even though Brookes has been the top NEW uni for 3 years in a row  ). It is relatively easy to be involved in automobiles & motorsports in Oxford than anywhere else in UK. And no wonder Brookes undergrads & grads develop excellent relationship with the F1 teams like BMW.
But in the end I opted for Bath instead of Brookes for Bath's reputation & flexibility. I'm not sure if I've made the right decision though. :frown:

Both Oxford universities have an excellent rep. in the motorsport world, practically the entirety of British motorsport is located here, not to mention a lot of foreign outfits. If you're interested in the upper eschelons of mech. engineering its definately the place to be.
Engineering full stop.......... is Imperial, its ranked

1) UK
1) Europe
5) World
