How common is it for a Uni to ask for you to send in a piece of creative writing for admission after you apply to secure an offer? Do all Unis do this for English Lit courses, only a few?

For all my pure lit courses (Newcastle, Exeter, Cambridge, Manchester) no written work was needed, but for joint with creative writing Nottingham wanted a 1,500 word piece. Also ive heard Warwick and UEA normally want some work for creative writing courses, but most other unis dont.
