What do I do about my unemployment, I'm getting depressed and have no confidence?

Although, I've found a great way to keep occupied and it can all be done on one weeks worth of dole money.

Step 1 - Buy £10 worth of beer
Step 2 - With the remaining £40, buy Skyrim.

It won't help you get employed but I found it really helps to take your mind off being unemployed...

Personally I'd love to start a business but I simply don't have an applicable skill that would make enough money to subset the start up costs of what I could do.

I don't have a games console, sold mine for some cash lol. So all I have is my computer, FUN!! lol. By the way, what is that Work Programme thing? I have to go to see someone about that at my local SEETEC, did you do the same? And what do they actually do? It says I maybe there for 2 - 3 hours, so was curious.

The reason I'm depressed is because I have been umemployed for so long, I have no money, and I have nothing to focus my time on. But I'm not sure about University anyway, as I don't even have any idea on what I want to do as a career. I am not just going to go to Uni without a passion or liking for the degree, it would be a waste of money & time. And I have applied for Sales jobs, but then they say they require someone with sales experience, which rules me out as I have never had sales experience. I have applied for kitchen staff at the local weatherspoons about 3 or 4 times, but every time they send back an "unsuccessful" email.

Remember what I said about not being snooty. Take any job you can that will open an avenue to customer facing work, till work or sales work. If that means being a potwasher for a few months until they need bar staff, or getting a bus for 40 minutes every day, so be it.

Do you have a car, or your own transport?
I started up my own Photography business, I'd started it a few years ago, but hadn't got into the 'full swing of it' as such. But since being unemployed the past year or so, I've buckled down on it a little more.
I still take on work when it comes available, but it's another way of bringing money in and keeping myself occupied.

If you don't feel you want to start up a business, that's fair enough, but perhaps find a hobby to occupy yourself? Although it won't be making you money, it will hopefully still get you up and out, and perhaps socialising etc. Which should boost your confidence!

Good luck! :mmm:

It's basically the job centre, except they actually talk to you about nothing, opposed to saying nothing.

All that happened was - I was there for a month before they relised that I had a CV and I knew how to write a letter. Step 1 finished!

Step 2 was to look for work, and they assigned me someone to help me browse the net for work - face palm. It's basically going somewhere to see someone type "indeed" in google. And then asking you "is this okay"?

Waste of time really. But you have to go or you don't get any money.

I just wish some company would just give me the chance to prove myself but instead they always play the safe route and hire someone with 10 years of shelf stacking experience to deal with all those shelf staking issues that could arise.

Have you been to all your local charity shops etc. to ask about volunteering? Might be more successful than a voluntary work agency?

Also, have you tried for a telesales job? I think a lot of them will take people on with no experience, and then you have to keep to their targets for a probationary period to keep the job.

Aww, I'm afraid I'm not :frown:

I can't quite afford to start hiring others at the moment, ha ha!

Well it was worth a shot I suppose! :P

Good luck with your business though, nice to see more young people making businesses work.

That is really good, and good luck with that. I don't really have enough money to go out and socialise that often, which makes me feel down because i'd like to go out more often. I don't really know what kind of business i could start to be honest, although that would be a good idea.

Well what do you enjoy? Is there something you are passionate about?

And it is hard, you sort of end up in a vicious circle right?
You don't have any money, because you're not working, and because you're not working you start to feel down and lose self confidence, but you have no money therefore can't get out to socialise and pick yourself back up again!

How about inviting friends over then? It's a lot cheaper to go to Tesco and buy a crate of beer, and invite some mates over.
Have a lads night in drinking beer and playing Skyrim (or whatever this new game's called lol!)
There are cheaper ways of having fun and still being able to socialise!

Complete sympathy for you here, getting a job is so tough right now. Im on a gap year and have been trying to find a job since September.

Everywhere asks for prior experience, so frustrating!..

Same here. In fact I've been applying since June.

To be honest, even though it's cliché I was thinking of applying to go on X factor. I can sing and I love to dance too, so I was thinking of giving it a try as I've never sang outside of the house. With the way things are with jobs it could be a good idea. I just don't know what to do any more though, I mean I'm 23 and most people have graduated by my age, so if I went back to college, did an access course (which I'd have to pay for now), and got into Uni, I would be about 25 years old by then. I don't know if I want to be still living at home by the time I'm 27/28 (graduation). Obviously, I would move away to Uni, but I would still have to come back to the village and my dad's house during long breaks etc.

I'd be careful with the X Factor because they seem to really mess around the contestants for no regards for their feelings just for the sake of entertainment. But if you think you can handle it then go ahead, you never know where it can lead you - it took Olly Murs from call centre worker to successful popstar and TV presenter :yep:

I can really relate to the unemployment problem as I'm struggling to find work too :hugs:. It's so frustrating trying your best and not knowing what more you can do! At the moment I'm only applying for mostly temp jobs in the hope that they're possibly a bit easier to get than permanent ones, especially with it being Christmas season and all. I have have a little business idea that I'm gonna try out to make some extra money. If you're able to create your own job and work for yourself then that could be better than relying on other people to pick you. If not, then I guess you've just got to keep trying and hoping you'll get lucky one day. Good luck

Yeah it is a vicious circle, i have put on some weight because i have been comfort eating through boredom. Then i put on weight and lose self esteem & motivation. I enjoy things like music, fitness, boxing, dancing lol, singing etc, i know that is a crazy mix, but that is what i genuinely enjoy. I am interested in the environment. and art too lol. And i dont drink tbh, so alcohol is kind of out the picture, and i don't have a games console either lol. I go boxing training 2x a week, which costs me £3 every time i go. I also go gym some days too, which i pay for monthly. I draw in my spare time, but nothing that will earn me any money lol (i'm not that great). But apart from that i don't know what else i can do.
Tell me about it! I've been looking and looking since September and cannot find anything whatsoever. I haven't even had so much as an acknowledgement email, let alone them telling me if I was successful or not

You're not alone, OP. I even ask places if they have any voluntary spaces and I still get no reply. It's a bad situation for a lot of people at the moment, but I am sure things will be get better. Just got to keep trying.

With reference to your 'X Factor' comment... Britain's Got Talent are doing auditions soon I think?

I can beat both of you; I've been applying hardcore since September 2010 . I was in college last academic year though so that made it not so bad, but now I'm unemployed I expected to find it easier since I'm much more flexible with my time, but no I still get rejected from everything :sigh:

Hmm, well it's really good that you're already doing things such as boxing and going to the gym. And seeing as you're working out quite often, I'd have thought you'd be burning the excess weight off?
Perhaps when you feel like comfort eating, draw something instead! Every time you feel like eating out of boredom, draw a duck instead... :mmm:

I know someone who went on X Factor and I don't think it was all what it's cracked up to be. I don't know her exceptionally well to know the full details, but she didn't manage to see the judges; you have to go through all this production staff where they select you to go forward and provide 'entertainment' value for the television.

Do you like Angry Birds? I really recommend that game - it's so cute and fun, you can download free on your computer and have hours of procrastinating fun . And then there are lots of websites where you can play games online. I'll recommend you some if you want.

Also, why don't you do volunteering in a charity shop? I got my charity shop job really easily, and so did my sister in another shop, and down my local high street I'm always seeing signs on the front of charity shops that they're always recruiting. It's good use of your time, helping a great cause and getting some good retail experience all in one! :yep:

This is inspiring to hear. Good luck with the business :top:. If you manage to become really successful then that's really good cos then you don't have to rely on other people to employ you for jobs to make a living. I'm also thinking of starting a little art business. I haven't been making art nearly as much as I used to though, just lost the motivation, but I guess I'd better give myself a kick in the butt to get back into the swing of things .

Oh yeah, I know this, have heard the stories. I know a couple of people who were in the same boat too, and it's a shame cos they were pretty good singers as well. It's kinda harsh when they'll reject those people but then let through bad singers just so we can laugh at them. Though, I guess I'm being a bit hypocritical anyway since I watch the show myself :teehee:
