I've lost all my brains

This has been stressing me out for such a long time but I need to sort it before I go to uni. Since about a year and a half ago, I have completely stopped working at school to the point where I know absolutely nothing and officially shouldn't be in the class. It all started after I began my highers. During standard grade I whizzed through everything because I had the knowledge already, but once I started Highers I just didn't bother. I still don't. I'm a lazy, stupid idiot and I've wasted my time and got bad grades, and now I'm doing Advanced Highers. I BEGGED my chemistry teacher to let me sit Advanced Higher, but I'm failing every test and I don't know how much more I can take. I try to be motivated and read my books, but I don't study them into detail. In class I sit there, switch off, daydream and wait for the bell. Then I go home and realise I know absolutely nothing. I just can't be bothered, basically. It sounds terrible but I hate the thought of actually working. Any advice? I've applied to do Forensic Science because I love the course and it's the only thing I've ever been excited about. I still need to work at uni though.

It sounds like you're not that bothered about continuing with an academic education. Get a job or something.
It may be worth taking a break then going back into education as a mature student when you feel more focussed. There's no point ploughing ahead at the moment and just getting frustrated.

Is there a reason why your feeling so un-motivated? Stress at home or anything?

I know exactly what you mean, I'm having the "I really can't be bothered to do this anymore" year as well. Can you take a year out before uni? That's what I'm doing, I'm going to force myself to work just for the next few months (which I keep telling myself really isn't much seeing as I've been in education since I was 5) and then chill out for a bit before I go to uni in the hope that this will get me back on track!

Oooh Forensics...interesting. I have a couple of books
no problem, you dont have to work during the year, just learn it right before the exams and its fine. Dont waste the rest of the year trying to learn ****

as for uni, you can probably do the same, but if you dont like education etc, there ISNT much point going, it would just be a huuuge waste of money

yeah I suppose I can just do my best and have a nice holiday. Totally de-stress. I do live at home with my irritating sister and assorted misfits, I don't have a desk or table to work on because everyone piles into the kitchen at night to watch tv and snack. Do you think it would be better to move into halls at uni? I'd get more space to study and access to books and computers.

Try studying at your District Library. It will help you get in the frame of mind to do work and will also give you peace and quiet from those annoying family members  Organise a set time for study and give yourself short breaks every 20-40 minutes (depending on when your attention waivers). Outside of your set study time you should reward yourself for your hard work. Set realistic goals for what you want to achieve during your day so you will feel acomplised once you are finished. Keep regular sleeping hours and remember to have time to de-stress. If you get really worked up just take a step back. Despite what anyone says they are only exams and your state of mind is far more valuable.

Thankyou! That's very worthwhile advice.

No problem  We've all been there at one time or another. Don't worry, it will pass and you'll wonder what you were fretting over. Good luck with your university application.

I shan't deny it: there is definitely something about the librarian sub-climate which seems conducive to industry.
