does the uni usually help in finding work placements or is it down to the individual?

Can't answer the second question with any authority but the university does help in finding placements, as I have a friend who is doing a sandwich year next year and all he really had to do was do well in his mock exams and be recommended by his tutor .

If the course is available without a sandwich year then I can't see why they wouldn't let you miss it out if you couldn't find a placement (though that would probably be unlikely) but if there isn't a non-placement version available, then it may be more complicated, as the industrial experience may be essential to later elements of the course like, for example, a dissertation.
