Hi - the way exam boards tot up marks for Maths GCSE papers is more complicated than it might sound, and I wondered if anyone could post exact details.

The following is what I know already:

- coursework - 3 strand marks, each /8, total mark/24 is then converted to a mark /80 - not by application of a single multiplier, but according to a table. I suspect different tables may also be used according to tier. For example, at Intermediate tier, I know that 7/7/7 is converted to 64/80, rather than the 70/80 that you might expect.

- sat papers - as we all know, a percentage is given. This is converted to a mark /200, presumably by simple multiplication by 2, although I would appreciate corroboration of my assumption

The marks /80, /200, and /200 are then totted up to give a mark /480. (I heard this direct from AQA).

The grade boundaries given in the examiner's reports are presumably rounded percentages. I would assume that the real grade boundaries are marks /480.

I'd be very grateful if maybe someone who has worked for one of the boards or who has otherwise learnt the details could fill me in on this.

Cheers,

Dave
