The Student Room Group
I've never been to GDS but I lived in Stamford St. They are pretty much of the same design and spec, so I would have thought the same? Only difference is the location - perhaps GDS is more appropriate for those studying at London Bridge, whereas Stamford St is more convenient for Waterloo and the Strand.

i live at GDS and have some mates at stamford st, and quality of accom. wise, they are pretty similar. Stamford St had a much better location in regards to being close to the strand, as its a short walking distance, as opposed to the 35 min walk from GDS. But ppl who go to the strand and who live at GDS dont moan too much about it

seems like i'm joining king's in sep 06, and the two residencies in the subject box are my top two choices.

Yay, me too! Only i put Stamford Street first (as i'll be at the waterloo capmus), and i visited GDS and didn't like the park that you have to walk across, though it's probubly quite nice when packed with students.

The residences look really good, although i am hoping that the more independant style of the apartments compared to the halls won't mean i cannot socialise as much. I have a friend at SS now and she is really enjoying it there, and says that her social life (when she can afford to socialise) is really good.

My main fear about going to Stamford street aprts is that some of the non-standard rooms don't have a view, i cannot imagine spending a year in a little box with hardly any light, So does anyone know what these non-standard rooms are really like? and how can i make sure i don't get placed in one of those?

thanks!

yeah, stamford street is def. my #1, then GDS. i think i'm gonna pick some intercollegiate ones because the rest of the KCL halls either have too few people in, no internet, or are too far out for my lazy self. i've got a friend who should be joining imperial and he wants to 'intercollegiate it', so we're gonna narrow those ones down tomrorow.

i was playing with google earth, and mapped out a few things. it's here in case, for any strange reason, anyone else wanted to take a peek.

Probably independent as you have to cook for yourself, clean your own room/bathroom. It's flats rather than halls. You are locked out from all the other flats, which is such a pain!
just ruin my shining image of the apartments :-(
p.s. why the smeg did you withdraw from ucl?

Hehe, because i didn't want to do the course, and so turning down the interview allowed another person a chance of place. Plus, i know exactly what i want to do, i'm about to withdraw the kings business one too. Need to apply for accommodation asap, as i don't know if i'll get it.

rape park behind GDS can be rather pleasant on a sunny day, but by taking a 2 minute detour and walking down borough high st you avoid it completely, saving your life, your wallet and your innocence at night. But seriously its not that bad... only 2 students have been mugged this year walking through it, which is nothing compared to some of the other places!

living in flats totally doesnt stop you socialising. At uni everyone wants to make friends, so everyone finds a way to socialise. In fact i think its better because you get really close to your flat, and then as you make friends from your course or clubs in other flats you end up meeting all of their flat mates, so accquire 7 extra friends for every one friend.

Usually to get a non-standard room you specify on the application, as alot of people want them, because they're alot a cheaper. So i wouldnt worry about randomly being given one.

Is that park realli that bad by GDS?? loll but tbh u wouldn't be out on ya own late at night in london generally anyways!!

The Park behind GDS is very busy at times. At night it is horrible, but you simply dont wander through there after dark.

It can be totally avoided by simply walking up Borough High St which is very busy and well-lit.

GDS is generally a very safe residence in my opinion...
dunno what i prefer. i'm putting SSA as #1, but i think i may put some intercollegiate ones above GDS. there's about 4 intercollegiate ones that i like, trying to order them preference wise is a pain in the arse.
right, i've decided on:

Stamford Street Apts

International Hall

Great Dover Street Apts

Commonwealth Hall

Hughes Parry Hall

Connaught Hall

well, that's me sorted for now.
And I've decided on:

Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts
Great Dover Street Apts

Magali - which GDS flat are you brightening-up with your presence?

hey i lived at stamford street.. it was A'OK.. nothin special but not crap either tbh.... i heard that gds had a better social, friendly atmosphere.. like people in ssa never hang out in the court yard or anythin its really every flat to themselves ( and the odd flat themed parties)
however gds' atmosphere is a lot better as ppl hang out in the court yard.. and just chill, however i have heard of a lot of racial clique'in and this is apparant in the common room i think! but the fact that gds has a common room is quite cool.

btw 3.14 (pie rite???) where you from.. coz if you wanna get the accom u want.. its best to try and do some deceit and act like you live outside of london by sayin u live at a relatives house perhaps (but thats taking it a bit far) lol.. however there is hope because im from north west london and i got ssa, my first choice!

also intercollegiate is supposed to be a bit dodgy... food is mingggg! lol.... and ppl are rumoured to be quite unsociable!

How comes you have already applied for accomodation :frown:...I received a letter from kings quite recently about accomodation and how to apply for it etc etc. but i'm not sure when to do it??? But if i was to choose i'd have gds for my first chioce definitely as its like 3 mins away from guys campus...during the Biomedical Sciences Open Day we got a little tour of GDS and it was nice, i wasn't expecting such a lovely student accomodation...the people and the whole surrounding was really warm and friendly:biggrin:
I'd put the stamford appartments as my second chioce as its supposed to be really good there too!

pi indeed. ya unfortnately i can't blag im from scotland or anything cus they got all my deets on the system, all i put in is preferences. i'm west midlands, so hopefully i'll be alright. as long as i get ssa or int. i'm not too bothered. anything else, i may rethink.
 I know this question must have been asked a million and one times between old/current King's students .... but I really feel the urge to ask it agen as I am pulling my hair out as to which of the two I should choose ....

Stamford Street OR Great Dover???

Someone please just choose for me as its driving me insane lol.
I am going to be studying English language in Sept so im based at Waterloo campus and I know distance wise, Stamford would be best, but I dunno .... I like the sound of the communal places at GDA that SSA doesnt seem to have ..... yet they have the benefits of the bar/rectory etc. at the Strand campus?????

HELP ME, please! lol. Thank you! xxx

I am in exactly the same position! I am worried that SSA won't be very sociable!
