Further Maths VS Chemistry

Further maths. Very enjoyable, very desirable, and chemistry has no relevance.

I personally adore Chemistry, and think that the Periodic Table of Elements is rather beautiful but by the sound of it, you might be better off taking Further Maths.
I started it, and practically died after a week of so much Maths, though not being the strongest of Mathematicians, that is probably why as I could not keep up with the pace!
If you enjoy Maths, are good at it, and can pick things up quickly, then that would definitely be of more use to you, especially for Computing. Hope that helps!

I do both. If you want something to go towards your career, you might want to go Further Maths. However, you said you wanted something interesting and enjoyable so I voted Chemistry. I love Chemistry.

Ok thanks people. Keep the advice coming. Further Maths and Chemistry are pretty even in the poll...

But apparently it's hard.

 No my friend, Chemistry is much harder than further maths. Top students in my school ended up with B in Chemistry and As or A*s in further maths. I've done chemistry last year and I'm now doing FM in 1 year (just finished the 3 AS modules). So far there is no competition, chemistry was much harder, it ended up taking 60-65% of my revision time...no joke.
Anyways CS requires FM, like they said it would be stupid not taking it.

You should have asked this question in the medical forum. Lots of aspiring Medics take both

If I go to JCC I will have 8 lessons of FM every week. Is that a lot. And on the website it says that the rating for Further Maths is "No pain without gain." That makes It sound hard. Anyway I applied for JCC yesterday and I chose Chemistry instead of FM. Do you think I could change from Chemistry to FM if I go to JCC?

Also, does anybody in this forum go to JCC? If so, tell me. I have a few questions to ask.

I'm currently doing both, they're as hard as eachother, if you enjoy maths, you'll enjoy further maths even more, chemistry is also pretty good if you enjoy it but if your heart is set on doing CS or something related, then its further maths, its not hard at As but it apparantly becomes hard in the 2nd year. Neither are hard as long as you did ok with them at gcse.

I much prefer Further Maths to Chemistry! Maths and FM just seems like one big subject to me... But yeah, I'd definitely recommend it.

Why do you prefer FM? The problem is that I'm probably going to go to JCC and I don't want to 8 lessons of FM a week. Isn't that a little to much? It will also mean that I will get less free periods and less time to chill at home/with friends.

Just to echo a lot of posters, F. Maths is going to have a lot more relevance to a Comp. Sci degree which will undoubtedly contain a strong Mathematical element - I'm in a similar situation choosing A Levels planning on either doing Mathematics or Comp. Sci + Mathematics, and whilst I've chosen both subjects (Maths/F. Maths/Phy/Chem, there's no Computing at my school or local college and I'm taking ICT a bit early), F.Maths certainly ranks much higher in my mind! I'd imagine that all of the matrices work, in addition to additional Decision/Discrete units will be a lot of help in Comp. Sci. (Besides, Maths is fun! )

I don't really care about how relevant the subjects are to Comp Sci. I just want to know which subject is more fun/enjoyable/interesting.

If you enjoy maths then further maths is the solution.

If you enjoy both maths and science then chemistry is the solution.

In your circumstance, it would make more sense if you choose Further maths as you've been advised.

whichever you enjoy the most, I do both and both are enjoyable, depends if you like maths more or chemistry, I'd say chemistry as 10 hours of maths a week is quite a lot especially if you dont want to do pure maths.

I don't know, I really enjoy maths and solving problems. :dontknow: I don't think that's a lot, that's around how many lessons I get per week for it. I guess it depends on if you want to do it or not. There's always the possibility of doing it for a few weeks and seeing how it goes then switching if your college allows that.

I don't know how you'll get less free periods and free time as I'm sure if you did chemistry, you'd get the same workload or maybe more.

My suggestion is further math as you want to study computer science. In that case math would be more helpful than chemistry.
