Internet addiction

Seriously. I've been having trouble disciplining my self to go to bed at night instead of playing about on net, I've stayed up nearly every day til 4am for the past 2 weeks  I enjoy that time, but it's making me get up late, and I realised early i need help. I can never seem to get away for long either, unless i'm at chess club or something. It's prolly related to my minor OCDisms, and I'd be grateful for any advice on this, particuarly those of you who have went through/are going through the same thing.

I sit on the net when i'm bored and have nothing better to do - like now when I'm nursing a foot injury and can't go to the gym.

Get a hobby.

I play chess as it said in the OP. Aww, hope your foot gets better. Iceman, don't be mean. It ain't funny. Last year I had depression and was messing up my sleep patterns in this exact same way; I don't want it to get any worse because already I've taken to waking up at 12 at the earliest.

I'm trying to cut down on using internet message boards as I find them addictive. And yes I get the irony :hmmm:

Start setting firm limits for yourself, i.e. have to go to bed by 3 a.m. and slowly work your way down to a sensible amount of online time. Alternatively, if you have the willpower go cold turkey, get your internet connection cut off and then after a month or two start allowing yourself some time.

I swear some people on here must spend most of their lives online  !

I just find it slightly worrying. Maybe its just me though  . I never said there was anything wrong with it.

Do something during the day that will make you too tired to stay up until 4am.

Try reading some books in bed - that's what I do to avoid the Internet, and I'm a bit of an addict too. I also frequently sign in MSN as 'Appear Offline', so I don't get trapped into conversations late at night unless I want to. Another thing I do is watch comedy DVDs until I fall asleep.

I usually have nothing better to do and end up wasting away in front of the PC on msn and forums. I'd suggest trying to get away from forums, as someone has said, they are addictive. I noticed that I was spending too much time on the internet since I've had a lot more time on my hands at home and I've deleted all my favourites that were the forums I used to go on. I still come on here and medschoolguide, but that's only when I have nothing at all to do. Try and concentrate on a hobby or a goal as someone's already said. I found that trying to go on a fitness regime helps

As I've already said twice , I play chess, and were I to concentrate on that I'd be playing online all night.

i've got the same problem but it's less now since we haven't got internet in our rooms and we have the lights out at a certain time...i remember one time my mom took away the internet i had serious redrawal syndromes, i used to dial up the ISP just to hear the tone..and i'd be ok for a few hours....just try and discpline yourself by going to bed at a certain time,or time the internet connection to go off at a certain time.

I've gota say, going cold-turkey may be a pretty good idea (despite the fact i'd miss you like crazy!) I was practically as addicted before the summer (especially to World Of Warcraft) but went on a month long holiday to Africa (so no net), and now I find it much easier to limit myself. Although it would be harder when you have the computer around you, you can always give it a go

I think it's a good idea too. A couple of summers ago I went way over the top and was staying up until the very early hours on the internet, but then I went to stay with my brother for a week with no access to the internet whatsoever and I came back and realised there was more to life than the web.

OP: know what you mean mate - I spent around 15 hours a day on the internet during the christmas holidays (should've been revising for A2 modules - didn't). not good.

maybe you could move your computer out of your room (if you still live at home or whatever)? That might help you to go to spend less time on it.

Or, how about getting a less comfortable chair in front of the computer so you can't stay on it too long because your backside will hurt after a bit? Usually gets me off computer.

You can never spend too much time on the internet! :P.

Theres nothing wrong with staying up abit late and having a nice lie-in in the morning - unless you have something important to do or go to.
