Tux vs Kilt

Starting at Oxford next October and I promised myself id get a tux if i got in. For all the balls and stuff (yes i am looking forward to playing the oxbridge sterotype a few nights a year).

I know u can rent them (£50!) but ive always liked the idea of the whole james bond thing and ive saved up doing a crap job for six months so ive decided sensible can wait for once.

Recently however my Mum who is very very scottish has been getting worried that she hasnt 'exposed me to my scottish heritage' and wants me to get a kilt instead.

Im not so sure. Firstly do people wear them and is there any time you cant wear them that you could wear a tux?

Secondly and more importantly do blokes in kilts look crap?

Unless you've got good legs and are prepared to be a proper scotsman don't bother.
what you really want to do is get a white tux and the tie-dye it.

kilts...mmm, bit of a turn off...mind you, if you have a scottish accent that'll make up for it!

no idea about a kilt, but if you're planning on going to some black tie type events, it's probably worth investing in something to wear - in the long run it'll be cheaper than renting
blokes in kilts are very sexy of course. you could compromise and wear a kilt with a tux jacket, thus drawing even more attention to your tails.

Go for the dinner suit.

I have a Scottish mate and whenever there is a black tie event, he wears the whole top outfit (dinner jacket, bow tie etc) and a kilt. It actually looks quite cool!

Go for the kilt I would say :biggrin:. Everyone else will have a boring tux so you'll look really cool. And didn't James Bond wear a kilt in On Her Majesty's Secret Service? :biggrin: {silently bemoans having a Bond obsessive best mate}

I believe he did. Ah, George Lazenby! OHMSS is probably the best Bond film. Lazenby performed well as Bond as well.

I thought that Lazenby was generally considered to be the weakest Bond? Oh well, I'm not a fan, I just hear things.

If you're comfortable in a kilt, go for it, if not get the DJ. Bear in mind that if you do wear a kilt you will be asked at least 10 times a night if you're wearing it "properly"

Lazenby is not considered one of the best. However, he is more like the Bond in the original novels.

If you get asked this, just reply 'It's not hard!'

The general impression with the girls in Australia is that we think guys in Kilts are hot, so go for it!

Yeah girls love a bloke in kilt. Especially if he's a Real Scotsman . Although my boyfriend tells me it's quite cold to be one and doesn't recommend it.

And my Bond-obsessive mate hates Lazenby with a passion and glowers at the mere mention of his name, so I get the impression he's not well liked although I haven't seen the film and he couldn't be worse than Pierce Brosnan

i have to say, a kilt will make you very popular with the ladies... if you can deal with the breeze, i'd say go for it.

Yeah kilts are cool..... but is it possible to dance in a kilt without looking like a complete twat??
LOL, may be kilt for the sake of the girls, but tux is a good long term investment
