that's good then! :yy: actually I remember reading that the room sizes will be 8ft by 15ft or something. Guess that's not really big enough for two sharing anyway

edit: plus that would kill the point of en suite :p:

If you say you are gay you can get a single room almost definatly

I got an offer from Hatfield a few weeks ago and was also worrying about the room sharing thing. Their website says they have 80 shared rooms and 230 singles or something (?). So dyou get your own room in your second year or move out or what?
Do they really do this so that there's a better community spirit or cause it comes cheaper?

in 2nd year most move out, and all rooms are the same price regardless of sharing

I think they do it simply bc there is a shortage of rooms...

Will they know if I pretend?
Yes, they have a secret Gayometer that they scan your application letter with - it detects trace amounts of poofteerium in then sweat from your fingerprints and analyses your handwriting for homosexual tendancies - it can even tell whether you're "completely" gay or just bi(-curious). What do you think? It depends how good you are at lying!
On a serious note however, when you turn up and aren't gay, the senior tutor/master etc. might get a bit *****ed off that you lied on the forms and messed them around. Wouldn't be a particularly auspicious start to your tertiary education now would it?
(P.S. I hope noone's been offended by that and that it's obvious that it's tongue in cheek...)

So you need a good excuse to get a single? You can't just say cause I don't like sharing or I'm claustrophobic or something silly?

Put it this way - my room mate last year wrote on her form "under no circumstances do I want to be put in a shared room" in big letters. We ended up sharing for a whole year, and got on really well!
What I would say to you is, fill in the form normally, don't write any stupid lies on it. If you get a single like you wanted, great! If you end up sharing, then no biggy, give it a try. You never know, you might end up enjoying it (shock horror! :p: ). Plus, shared rooms tend to be massive and a LOT nicer than singles.

Thanks a lot, that's encouraging! I'm getting less worried about it all now, since you all seem to have good experiences and the atmosphere sounds really friendly and open.

Yeah I only know a very small number of people who have not enjoyed sharing, and that can always be rectified if it's a HUGE problem.

I still don't think I'd go if I had to share a room. I will have to endeavour to find out when visiting if it can be guarenteed for me to not have a double.

If you have a decent reason other than just wanting to have a single then there is a high chance you will get one, being gay is a reason, a single room is never gaurenteed but colleges try thier best as it saves them hassle later

Alternatively, you could just sleep on my floor... But then again, I may puke on you... No harm intended....

I seriously don't see the problem with sharing.

Just put that you don't want to share in the first term on the form, and then share with your best mate in either the second or the third. What's the big deal?

Sharing a room can actually be a lot of fun, and useful, especially in the first term as it means you do meet people. Your college should try hard to match you up with someone who you will get on with. When I filled in my application forms I didn't want to share a room, but have ended up in a shared room and I love it. It's huge, my room mate is fantastic and we get on really well, and will still be living together next year. If sharing a room really doesn't work for you then you can always ask to be moved to a single room and colleges will try to sort this out.

Not every college makes you swap rooms every term though do they?

You will be matched well if you share. In all probability, it is certainly the case her tut collingwood.
