LPC Dilemma

I've just received my LPC offers... got ones from Sheffield Uni, BPP Leeds and Nottingham.

Now I had my heart set on Sheffield as its an excellent uni for law/LPC, its 20mins drive away and I want to live at home, and I absolutely adore Sheffield as a city
So I merrily put BPP as a backup (its commutable as Im doing the Sheffield-Leeds M1 rat-run now, and obviously great place to study) and scribbled Nottingham in 3rd choice just to fill a gap, and for a laugh really  didn't expect to be offered a place as it was my 3rd choice.

However I have got a place, even though their letter snottily informs me that they "note Nottingham was not my first choice, and do not normally offer places to students who do not put Nottingham as their first choice"

I personally do not rate Nottingham hugely above Sheffield, as previous posts with Aimsi and Blondiell show ... however since I got this offer, so many people have urged me to go to Nottingham, because it will be a better study experience, will get a lot out of studying there, and for the prestige of being a Nottingham student. So now Im feeling a bit confused!

I have a TC and my firm dont have any preference to where I study.
Going to Nottingham is still commutable in theory (I can get on at Junction 29 M1 and its only at 25) but its arguable the busiest and most difficult stretch of M1 - possibly sitting in traffic for hours and hours a week. Im not thrilled about the prospect as its difficult enough doing Leeds now, but if its going to be much more beneficial than Sheffield in the long run, ie, actually set me up to be a better lawyer, then it will be worth it.

I just dont want to regret my decision, because as some people on here will be aware, I hugely regret my decision as to which uni I study at now :frown:

Does anyone have any opinions, stories, anything that might be able to help me make a decision.....?

* Rep for anything super-useful

Do you have a training contract, if so- what does your firm say? What options do the two courses offer and which do you prefer?

If you already have a training contract, provided your firm does not have a preference there will be little between LPCs- by the time you look for another job (at the earliest for an NQ position) no-one will worry were you did your LPC, rather it will be the experiences you gained during your seats, and perhaps rather unfairly where you did your law degree (at least this was my Sister's experience). If you haven't got a training contract I can't see how the prestige of one course will assist you greatly- unlike law degrees/masters the perceived differences between different LPCs/BVCs are minimal.

I completely agree with PDJM. If you have a training contract then it will not matter where you studied the LPC when you come to look for NQ positions.

It will simply be a matter of where you did your TC and your degree grade. My firm (top 40) didnt care where I was studying the LPC and they still dont provided I pass the course...the LPC is simply a formality (and I think most law firms acknowledge it as such) and higher grades and where you studied will only really be useful if you dont have a TC or need to prove yourself after getting a lower degree grade perhaps.

Lastly, the fact that there is a huge volume of work on the LPC means that a long tiring drive from Sheffield to Notts each day would cut into valuable study/ social life time and would be more taxing on the funds (petrolwise) and in my personal opinion the commute simply would not be worth it....as you say Sheffield is also a good place to do the LPC so sounds like it may be the better choice all round.

Is there no way you would consider moving to Nottingham for the year? It is more highly rated in terms of training than Sheffield and is honestly a wonderful school. The social life is also supposed to be brilliant.

However as you know the traditional big three law school are Notts, BPP London and CoL London. Where are the rest of the trainees from your firm going?

Undoubtably at this stage it is fairly irrelevent where you go but seeing as you have a year to deter the onslaught of working life you might as well enjoy it as much as possible!

Yes I do have a training contract, and no my firm has no preference as to where I do LPC.

I definately will not consider moving because my long term boyfriend and I are currently starting the long process of buying our first house  and I just won't be able to juggle this with the LPC work and my part time job which is 20 hours a week.

I'm just trying to weigh up whether Nottingham can give me a better start as a lawyer than Sheffield really...
Nottingham does have a formidable reputation for the BVC but there is less choice for that. If I was you I would go to the place where you would be happiest. Sheffield should be really good and you will save some money living at home.

Hi Elle.

As you've got yourself a TC, go wherever you think you'll be happiest. Once you've got a TC lined up, no-one cares where you go or how you do (providing you pass).

Hey Elle,

Id say chose where YOU want to go and where you think youll be happiest etc. You say the Nottingham route is "do-able" but it will put extra pressure on you and extra hassle to be honest, when the LPC is hard enough.

With regards to your job....i guess you will be dramatically reducing your hours once you start the LPC? Just a warning that there is alot of work. Maybe see how it goes in the first few weeks or something.

Good luck with the decision, and let us all know what you decide.

Thankyou

I especially liked the advice about sitting in on a workshop, I hadnt thought of that and I think that would really help me see beyond the "gloss" of the open days.

Aimsi how much part time work do people generally do on the LPC?? Iv done 20 hours+ throughout my degree (Im on target for a 1:1) but it has been very difficult to manage.... do you think it may not be possible to do this much work when on the LPC?? xx

well maybe just see how it goes....i personally dont work at all now im on the LPC and none of my friends do either...there just doesnt seem to be enough time. However, that said there are some people in my group that do a couple of evenings a week or a few hours at weekends. I think i remember being advised that you shouldnt do anymore between 10-15 hours a week but this is obv an average and different ppl manage things differently too, and if youre on for a first then you must be quite well organised etc.The other thing to think about is time though, as in when do you work at the moment, in the day? As the LPC timetable varies from week to week it would be very hard to plan shifts etc.

Decided where youre gonna go yet? Good luck with it.

Thanks, thats really helpful xx

Im going to go to Sheffield. I've spoken to loads of different tutors and my law firm and stuff, and the unanimous opinion is go where I will be the most happy, and where they do electives that I want to do.

I've always wanted to go to Sheffield, I love the city and want to come home permanently, and don't want to be commuting anymore. And they do the electives I want to do, and I know at least 3 other people who are going, which will be great while Im settling in. And the timetable doesnt fluctuate at Sheffield, its set every week the same, which will mean that I will be able to work if I can manage it, and my work is only 10 mins drive from Sheffield Uni.

Everyone I spoke to did say that if I didnt have a training contract, Nottingham would be the best choice simply to have the name on my CV when applying, but as I have a TC it wont make any difference - Sheffield will make me just as good a laywer, and once Iv done my TC, it wont matter where I took the LPC because they will be looking at my experience and references should I want to change firms.

Thanks to everyone who has helped on this thread, especially you Aimsi xx

Thats cool, im glad youve reached a decision...it must be a weight off your mind to know that you know where youre going now and youre all sorted. Now you can concentrate on getting the exams this year out of the way - its a good feeling to know whats going on though and now you can relax a bit (well kinda!).

Sheffield sounds like completely the right choice for you with locality etc and thats good that they have a fixed timetable, i didnt know that, so you can plan your work around uni too.

What electives were you thinking of? Three doesnt seem enough does it!

Good luck with everything xx

Definately not enough!!!!!!

Family definately, then Im thinking maybe some sort of commercial property, and depending how I go in the compulsory modules, advanced criminal litigation. I definately fancy something litigation-based.

What electives do you do, do u have any advice on how to make these decisions?! xx

Im taking Family, Advanced Criminal Litigation and Employment.

We had an options talk at the start of the term but im sure there must be some stuff on the uni website too. Have you looked at Sheffields LPC website, i assume they have one, which might provide details about each elective to help you decide. Do you have to decide before you go?
