how could you not pronounce the H in haitch? that would be weird, do you say Ello instead of Hello?
    What?

Haitch isn't a word, it's just how some people pronounce the letter.

'Aitch'. Just like 'butter' and 'matter', not 'buh-uh' and 'mah-uh'.

Again, like 'aitch' is the correct pronunciation of 'H', 'zed' is the correct pronunciation of 'Z'

I say "eye hyphen eye" in order to avoid discussions such as this.

why would you not pronounce the T's?
Exactly. 'Butter' is pronounced 'butter' because it has t's in it. 'Aitch' is pronounced 'Aitch', because there isn't an 'h' at the beginning. Simple.

From experience people can either say it as

    "Zed"

    or

"Zee" (pronounce Zero and it's the first part. Ze.)

But Aitch is not a word. So you can't "sound it out"

Yes it is, it's in the Oxford English Dictionary.

    Yes!! How'd you guess?!

And I even write 'Z' as Z. Being a mathematician I use Z quite a lot and I've found that international students find it easier if you say Zed as it is quite distinctive.

There really is no good reason to use 'Zee'.
