Sorry to hear the news, pendragon. Don't know anyone who's done history, but a friend of mine did his M.Sc. at LSE (Industrial Relations) and went on to D.Phil in IR at Oxford.

Regardless, I'm sure you must have lots of options available to you if Oxford was even in the cards.

Thanks. Maybe it wasnt, I just thought it was because I went there for undergrad

I just called them. Didnt get a place, I finally know what its like to be an Oxbridge reject  Im going to put in late applications for LSE and KCL. Spoze I could reapply for DPhil after my masters. Good luck to those who are still waiting, hope you have better news  .

People who are going for DPhils where did you get undergrad and masters degrees?

Bad luck... maybe take a few years off and publish a few things then try again. Publications always really improve your application.

I'm not going for a DPhil yet, but have discussed staying on with the department in Oxford after my MPhil (already). I have a bachelor's and a graduate bachelors from the University of Cape Town. I think though that my published papers and teaching and practical experience counted a lot more in my acceptance than my previous degrees.

Basically, I don't think it matters where you did your u/g as long as you can prove you've used it well. If you've just graduated, relax, enjoy working for a bit and come back to being a student.

well i did my undegrad in trinity college dublin, and my masters in the university of aberdeen.

it still hasn't really sunk in about oxford! the only thing is that i am totally skint and so are my family, so unless i get funding i won't be able to take the place :frown: i applied for a scholarship but the decision won't be made for another month or too aarrrghhh. the agony!
That's a damn shame.

Good luck with the funding

Got a conditional offer for Mphil economics but it says i have to reply within 3 weeks :frown:. Does anyone know if i can accept the offer then change my mind later? Or by accepting it, i become somewhat bound (finanacially or legally)?
You have to accept the department offer to receive your college offer and University contract. I suppose if you never sign the contract or accept the college offer you are not legally bound.

I'm not a lawyer though....

I don't think you're legally bound. After all it says that if all the conditions (including financial ones) are not met you cannot take up the place, so i guess if you don't have the funding they simply won't send you the contract and you'll lose your place. I have the same problem, as I'm going to apply for funding in the next month or so but I'll accept the offer for now.
Also, I have to reply to my departmental offer, not the college one, and it's the college who sets the financial conditions... I guess you can't be bound to pay anything if you accept the department's offer.

You and me both

Sorry to hear, Ziz. Better luck next year!

Still waiting... Perhaps mail takes a little longer to get to my part of the country.

I'd assume you were accepted given what Andrew told you about doing the letters in batches...mine was probably in the unsuccessful batch. Speaking of which, the letter was quite curt. "Your application was unsuccessful and you will have to make alternative arrangements for next year. Please note that if you have made an application for an Oxford scholarship that it will not proceed further." Not even the usual "the quality of applicants was very high" or "competition for places was fierce." Nothing to make you feel a teeny bit better .

Geez -- that *is* a bit cold.

Well, I don't know if the batches of mail around going out if waves of 'successful' and 'unsuccessful', but I'm hoping that there will be something in the mail in the next couple days. I'm just tired of worrying at this point. With several major papers due in the next few weeks, I need to channel my stress into more productive activities!

Fingers still crossed

I am yet to hear too. Maybe its because I am not in the UK or Europe. Its quite stressing, why don't they just email and let us know the verdict. Anyways, someone mentioned that publications help, does it (publication) have to be journal/academic articles or newspapers articles would do? any idea?

I should be focusing on my thesis but just can't. Maybe I should follow geoffc's lead and start getting my things done.
I have two sections on my CV. One for peer-reviewed journal articles (proper academic stuff) and another for what I call "informed/professional journalism" so articles in journals and magazines that require me to draw on my professional knowledge. I wouldn't list really journalistic articles (unless you want to be a journalist  )

Well, I now have to drop my procrastination method of running downstairs to check the mail every 10 minutes in the morning. Just got my acceptance letter for MPhil Comp. Gov. today!!

One question: The letter states that if all conditions are met, I will be sent a final confirmatory acceptance letter. But there are not any conditions specified in the letter I received, with the exception of being admitted to a college (which, I gather, is guaranteed). Can anyone fill me in? Is the only condition that I successfully complete my undergraduate degree?
Well done Geoff!!! Oxford here you come!

I don't know who writes these letters, but mine had the worst grammar I'd ever seen in an official University letter. It was filled with ambiguous sentences, errors of concord, the works!

My point is: Its probably a similar thing in yours. Just write back and confirm your acceptance of the place and the start date and I'm sure you'll find out sooner or later if anything's amiss.
What is a third gathered field?
ignore the above post! just read the comments closely and saw the answer was given ages ago.

I'm thinking about applying for D.Clin.Psych but this is a different, centralised process with only one application deadline.

Cheers!

Congratulations, Geoff!!

I've been following this thread for awhile, also anxiously waiting to hear. I just got my acceptance for an MPhil Comparative Government a few days ago. I'm over the moon!
