Hey panda , ive applied for EH and DF and have been told i will be getting an interview , i just wondering what kind of things you get asked in the interview and if you have any tips? Cheers

Hey RocKape,

My interviewer was Ian Ferguson. After the interview I was left with impression of him being a great guy and this turned out to be true later at the uni.

First he asked a few questions about where I am from for a warmup, then things mentioned in my personal statement - previous computer security experience, general computing knowledge, what was my experience with programming languages that I had mentioned, team work experience. Then he asked why Abertay, why EH and not Computing (I had some programming experience). Last thing asked was if I had any questions about Abertay.

Hope this helps, cheers.

Out of interest, when did you send off your application?

Also, as an open question to anyone, are the EH and DF interviews in person or over the phone? I've heard various people say different things about this...

I think i sent the application off in october

All of the Universities halls are here - you'd specifically be looking for ones for non-senior students of course. If you're not paying Opal is nice - note the distance Alloway is from the University though. (That said being cut off from campus has it's advantages)

Private Halls are:

http://www.crm-students.com/en/student-accommodation/dundee
http://www.courthouseapartments.co.uk/location.htm

That's roughly my order of preference - Oldmill is great value for money, the Hub you get what you pay for - Courthouse I haven't seen or heard about since it became private. (Abertay used to run it)

Well, 1st u need to list your priorities and gadget and ur own personality plays a role in it as well...

In terms of your choices .... EH and game development are totally different and I would assume that you chose at least oen of thsoe courses just cause it sounds like fun. And if that`s the case with any of the courses then discard it immediately or you will regret it later on.

Gee, thanx, I didn`t know there are other private halls (I assumed there is only Opal as private hall)
Still, it looks like Opal> all but Opal doesn`t have pool table in a common room ... :frown:

Opal and The Hub are more or less equal these days (The Hub was probably better last year which was Opal's first year of operation)

Is that because of Opal`s security and better prize + more Abertay friendly?
Any plans for implementing pool table in near future?

The Hub is part a secure compound with 24 hour onsite staff too

Price is always helpful and yeah for Abertay Students the fact that Abertay reserves most of the place for it's students does help lol.

No idea about pool tables, you'd wanna email [email protected] in the first instance, of course the Sports Bar ain't a far walk if you're wanting pool
I'm going to Abertay after the summer to study computer arts, excited! Just looking for accommodation now, but I'm pretty sure I know where I'm going, just hoping I get decent flatmates like I have before!

There's a Computer Arts student employed by the Students' Association now so if you have any question I'm sure I could get answers for you

Could you find out what software is used for the course, I went for an interview in 2010 and I think the interviewer said that it was Maya, Would be great if you could find out.

also, you could ask if there is any other 3D modelling software available such as Zbrush or mudbox?

That SA employee would be me!
In first year, we are technically only taught Photoshop and Flash (CS3-5.5, it depends on the module and room the tutorial is in.) but I've ended up teaching myself/using Illustrator and InDesign, too. 3D-wise, in first year we're taught Maya but I think they don't mind too much what your preferred package is once you get to second year. Even though we're technically meant to use Maya loads of guys I now who already know a package just use that; 3DS Max, Blender, Softimage, Mudbox etc. As for what is actually installed, it depends on the room/machine, but if the program you want isn't installed you can always request it from IS.

To be honest, they're all pretty similar and it's good to be able to use more than one, anyway. When are your interviews? c:

I had an interview at Abertay when I was still in School in 2010, and got a conditional offer of a 'BBC', once my exam results came through I could have started the course, however I decided to take a year out to experience life in a different job as an alternative career path and to save up a little bit of money if I did decide on Uni.

My intention was to apply this year, however I ended up taking on a full time job over the Christmas period and completely forgot about the 15 Jan deadline. However I can still apply up to June, then for clearing if available. So I am currently waiting on my old guidance teacher updating and submitting my referral to UCAS so that I can apply, although Abertay seems to be the number one choice for 3D Arts in Scotland So I may have to defer until next year.

Can you remember how many people were on the course when you started?

Just got an invertation to an 'Applicants Day'. Unfortunately I can't go to them. First one is this Wednesday. Is too short to organisate (I'm from Germany and fulltime worker). The next one is in my Exam times and the third one is in June. If I remember right I have to firm until somewhere in May. As Abertay will be my firm I guess I don't need to watch the campus and everything because I'm sure that I want to go to Abertay if they accept my firm. What should I tell them? I don't want to make them think I'm not interested.

I think you can contact them for a phone interview?

See what the student Association says, but if in doubt just give the University admissions a phone/email and see if they can help you.

I know I'm a UoD student but just had to jump in here and say if you're looking at private halls, keillor court is by far the nicest. I have friends in just about every hall in dundee (uni owned or private) and keillor is deffo the best and is about the same price as old mill (they are owned by the same people).
