please help me choose!! newcastle or manchester??

hi everyone, iv applied to study biomedical science this year, and i need to make a desicion between newcastle and manchester,i really need ur help....heres a list of pros and cons for each uni....
NEWCASTLE - Pros
* i love the city!
* everyone was really friendly when i visited
* its 2nd in the country for biomed
* the course itself looks really fun
* in the 2nd year i rly want to do human gentetics, n newcastles the only uni that specialises in human genetics.

- Cons
* doesnt offer a year out to do work experience
* maybe doesnt have as many facilities such as huge library etc
*possibly less likely to get a job at the end of my degree

MANCHESTER - Pros
* would offer me £5000 a year if i get 3 As at a level BUT theyve offered me AAB so if i get that i have to go to manchester and not get the grant = loads of pressure on me
* course includes a year out in industry which is paid
* fun city - loads to do
* does lots of biomed research

- Cons
* a bit too big...crime may be more of a problem etc :frown:
* the course seems more academic, more practical etc...although could b a good thing in terms of getting a job at the end of my degree
* didnt feel as friendly when i visited :frown:
* rainy!!

So please will anyone with an opinion help me!! ....should i go for the money, or for the city i really love? Thanks for your help xxxxxx

heya, i've the same dilemma as you, i've got an offer from newcastle...havent heard from manchester but if i do it will be between those two. i probably can't help you! but don't worry bout the 5000 squid being the decider...ignore that and concentrate solely on where you think you'd like the most...that's what im goin to do anyways. have to say that the job prospects from manchester over newcastle is gonna be another decider as well.. lol sorry im not helping at all, just saying u're not alone! lol : D and ignore the rainy con...cos it's colder in newcastle...so the weather aint too great in either place! oh my bro went to newcastle and loved it by the way. but im sure loadsa ppl adore manc as well..

sry that was ***** help : s gd luck xx

hi...well ive applied to manc and newc too..but im from newcastle..have an offer but i have an interview next week from manc- so as yet im not quite in the same situation YET but potentially could be except I want to move away.

personally..the course content at manc seems to suit me more- it has a genetic element etc which im interested in- so have a look more closely into the topics covered and see which interests you the most.

both are great unis so guess any will be as good as eachother...may see you at either!! good luck x

does the biomedical course at manchester have more of a genetic element?? i really like how u can specialise in human genetics in newcastle. Whats it like living in newcastle?? cheers for replying....yeh might c u there

at newc u study the following in the first year
1)biochemistry
2)cell biology

5)physiology
6)pharmacology

then in 2nd...
Immune system, infectious disease, reproduction, respiration, drug metabolism, anatony, bacteria and parasites, viruses

3rd...

In manc..

theyre on there...cant type them all out but it gives u all you need

as for living in newcastle-its quite cheap, lots to do- i love the city- in a way i dont want to leave, but i want to find me feet etc! the weather isnt that bad either- fair enough its coldish in the winter but it isnt that bad!

i didnt even realise that manchester did this degree until recently, so i didnt apply! im going for the same degree as u tho at newcastle and i think thats gonna be my firm and northumnbria my insurance cos i really wanna live in newcastle!
y do u think it will be possibly less likely to get a job than manchester cos if its 2nd in the country then surely it wud be easier rite?
mango_9 have u tried ringin up newcastle and explaining that u cant go? they may be able to fix u up with anoher time. its really far away for me to travel aswell! gonna take me 7hours on a coach on friday to go see northumbria for sat! great n then wen i go to visit newcastle uni im goin via train for 4 hours!

well no not really cos to get a job you need the best work experience and at manchester you can have a year working in industry which newcastle doesnt offer, and also manchester is more of a practical degree than newcastle so you might get more experience there too. im so stuck?!! i like both unis, dont want to make a mistake but rly dont know how im gonna choose between them. mayb c u at newcastle
My personal preference would be Newcastle.

TBH both are excellent universities.

I've applied there, and have an offer for English (AAB).
I simply prefer the look of the University. Reputation-wise they're on a par, so...

There's a pretty good chance you will be able to take a year out between 2nd and 3rd year even if it does not explicitly say so in the prospectus. I know I can do that for my course at Newcastle (computer science). Your best off emailing them and asking if thats your only concern.

No big library? lol!
You should have visited the Robinson Library, it's huge. But it won't bother you much whether it's huge or not since you'll most probably only be using the Walton Library located in the Medical School as they have all the books you might be interested in for your course.

Why should it be less likely for you to get a job after uni?

You should definitely go for the city you really love! I don't really know much about either university to be honest, but it's really obvious from your post that you would prefer to go to Newcastle. (more smileys, sad smileys for Manchester!)

Well Kayleigh I'm from yorkshire too and I'm going to newcastle in september to do english. At my last uni (I'm 18 am taking time out) I had a friend who'd been to manchester and hated it cos she had to walk through a rough estate to get any food. But don't let the money affect you. Brunel have offered me an obscene amount to go there but it's very mixed-race (not a negative for everyone but it is for me. Argue and you'll look like a political correctness nut) and it's not as highly rated. I know nothing about biology but the course and the city are what matter, not the cash. Believe me.

It's second for bioLOGICAL sciences, not biomed... you lot are a bunch of losers!!! wannabe medics!!!!

and the library is well good!
Reply 17
im not a wanna be medic actually, i got 5 As at as level so could study medicine if thats what i wanted to do..i happen to actually want to study biomedical science n will hopefully go into medical research in the future. newcastle is also number 2 in the league table for 'other subjects allied to medicine' which happens to include biomedical science.

and in response to the thread a bit ago no i still havnt made up my mind....im so stuck, both unis r great! xx
