I said I would never post again.... but I am back. I have been to two RESCUE events as a friend asked me to go with him.

I found that the speakers were very good and convincing, but provided a lack of contrary opinions (admittedly as would be expected), and also made some very dubious comments. In both of the talks I went to Richard Dawkins was catagorically (sp?) dismissed as having nothing of value to say. While I agree that some of Dawkins views are a bit small minded, they are certainly appear less small minded than those of the speaker.

Todays speaker made the step from highly improbable possibility to impossibility when discussing religion, and hence proved that there must be a creator.

I do not mind people having religion, nor do I mind that the RESCUE event is being put on, however I think an open forum for discussion would be much better for people who are considering their faith.

I am more than willing to discuss faith and beleifs over email or a coffee, so just pm me if you want to know my beleifs and feelings.

P.S. Food has always been used by religions!!...

of course leon is a member!

as for diccu - why dedicate a whole talk ot proving there is a creator - that's not the part i take issue with, it's well within the realms of possibility i spose.

the part i dont like is the leap from "there must have been a creator" to "you cant have sex before marriage/use contraception/take the mick out of us/be gay etc

Yeah, I tried to bring up that point, and they said that If they could prove that Jesus existed and did what was said in the bible then Christianity must be the answer and the other religions were wrong....

Just joined your church btw

I can't comment on Islam, as I don't know enough about it, and I am not proud about that.

I'm trying not to discuss the merits of various religions, as I am unable to discuss it sensitively on a forum.

What I wish to discuss is the way the RESCUE speakers presented to me their veiw of Christianity as logical fact.

Being the operative word...

N.B. I have no more problem in accepting that Jesus of Nazareth was a real man than I have of accepting that Louis XVI of France existed. What I don't think is right (as it is against the philosophy of science) is accepting the result of an unrepeatable experiment (Jesus turning water into wine etc.) and then, instead of trying to work out (e.g.) how Lazarus rose from the dead, just attribute it, essentially, to magic, and then attributing this magic to being the work of some creator.

Becca, are you a music student (I notice your in the Classical Music Society)?

Oh no I'm a Languages student, just a classical music fan. I've just realise you're Jacob's friend aren't you? He was the one who told me about your hoodies.

There, although I think the establishment of any sort of society with any sort of agenda when it comes to discussing spirtuality or a lack thereof is equally as futile and pointless as any other. The way some people are talking here as if establishing/joining such a society would be retaliatory is just unhealthy.

The Rescue campaign is verging on insulting but it's harmless.

For the record I think I could only describe myself as entirely irreligious/unspiritual, I'm not anything from atheist to theist or anywhere in between, I just desperately, desperately don't care (if you can desperately not do something). I have humanist and secularist values but I'd never join the society because it's just identifying with people with the same beliefs as you and labelling yourself. Why join any society based on any of this? Just believe/disbelieve what you want and f*** everyone else. I don't understand.
I can only see societies with secularist or humanist agenda in the say way as I see any society with any shared value set or agenda - absolutely simply pointless and those who join them, while they may say it's because they want an environment in which to discuss or whatever, I can't help but feel want to identify with other people as part of a shared-values club and no, it's not necessarily the same as religion, but it's no more productive. Why can't everyone posess and discuss their own values or ideas without being tribal about it.

In other words: You're all as bad as eachother, some of you are significantly more rational, but none of you can play nice.

psst... when this thread was made and active there was no humanist society. This thread is 5 years old.
