Touched up on public transport

I was on the bus today (not crowded i might add) and a fat, 37ish year old man was standing next/behind me. His hand touched my waist and i moved away slightly thinking that it was just an accidental brushing. However, he continued to move towards me again, putting his hand back onto my waist. I asked him politely but firmly to stop it and then, thinking he would get the hint, went back to staring into the middle distance. Then he put his foot next to mine, i moved it away and he moved it back so i moved a little further down the bus as i realised this wasn't just a normal guy-doesn't-get-that-you're-not-comfortable senario. He really started scaring me when he began to lean against me with all his weight, trapping me against the glass panal and i cast aside all embarrassment and said really loud 'Stop, please or i'll call the police' (you always think you will think of something really cop-showish to say in situations like this, but evidently not). We reached the next bus stop and he tried to get me off the bus with him by pushing me and grabbing my arm, i told him to **** off and let me go but he just stared at me with this horrible grin on his face.

Anyway that isnt really my point, that's just London for you... my real point is, despite his absolutely blatent physicall harrassment of a teenage girl, and my loud reprimands, absolutely no one said anything! .. People looked on, but no one gave any sign of giving a **** beyond seeing what he'd do next. Now i'm not asking for a knight in shining armor, but if just one of the several builders had said something i'm sure he would have backed off. The only person who said anything was a guy with down's syndrome who asked if i would like to take his seat/swap places with him.

That's horrible o_o

Both, what that idiot did to you and how people reacted to it! If I saw something like that I would've challenged the guy

my sister has always told me if some is following you in a car or in the street etc say really loudly stop following me, and then if they carry on shout it

yeh i totally aggree with you, my mate was shopping in the middle of oxford street on a saturday and she fainted and nobody even stopped to help her or ask if she was ok!!!
i guess nobody want to get invloved- i'm guilty of this myself to be honest i saw a guy fall asleep out of drunkenness on a bench on the platform of tottenham court road get pickpocketed but after much thought i just decided it wasn't my problem and not to get involved in something that could potentially land me in danger, or significantly delay my journey home.

your situation worse though, i cant see why nobody would say anything...if i had sat there i would have probably said what the hell do you think you are doing or something....but it depends...if he was a big wierd guy then i might have just kept my mouth shut....possibly a adult bloke would have much more clout and should step in.

as for being touched up on public transport...my mate was on the tube and a man actually put his hand down her trousers. now that's disturbing....and actually once a guy sat near me on the tube was wanking!!! luckily another lady announced it loudly and embarrased him off the train...but again...i was too scared to say anything!

Things like this happen, and it makes me want to floor these perverts, but the really sad thing is how no-one really steps in or stands up to them nowadays.

Woah, tough situation. I would floored the dude after you first shouted. The bus-driver should have said something, I think..

i just can't believe how amazingly weird and peverted people can be, and how many wierd and peverted people there are out there!! it's astounding.
i do think it's bad that often nobody steps in these situations but, like in my above post sometimes it's just easier to not get involved or aggravate the person...as the consequences are potentially dangerous, esp for someone like me- also a young woman.

I really wanted to just deck him, shock him out of thinking he can do things like that and get away with it...but then that time old saying that i'd be in the wrong made me think twice...so **** off was the best i could do.

Reply 13

i think what you did was right, if it were me i would have probably walked right away first and stood near a respectable looking man and if he still persisted i would have said exactly the same thing as you.
it's just not worth aggravating the situation, for all you know if you had said anything worse or hit him away he might have hit you back, or worse.

I sympathise....I was at a train station (not hugely crowded but there were definitely people there) and a guy came up to me and told me we were 'meant to be together' and he knew it ws love when he saw me. He told me he'd followed me for half an hour and then a train came in and he moved in and put his hands over my ears because it was really loud and then he grabbed me and started whispering in my ear (and man...it was gross what he was saying!) and then he tried to drag me up the station stairs to the main area where we could.....and I quote..."do things"....and I had to run into the waiting room where there were more people, luckily he didn't follow but...no one did anything and it was blindingly obvious from him grabbing my arm and me pulling away and saying "f**k off" loudly that I wasn't happy. But...no one did anything for me either.

Maybe people jsut think it's none of their business so they stay out of it....fair enough.....but there's no harm in checking!

Unless there was a serious age gap, I don't think many people would know whether or not the guy on the bus is your boyfriend and you're just annoyed because you think its inappropriate

Reply 16

very glad you're okay.

God help any man that ever tries that in my presence.

In my absence, there's an easy option. A swift kick to the family jewels will take the horniness from any man. Or a knee. Or a fist.

what lines/bus routes do you peps take! im northen line, but have never been in *such* a dodgy situation!

The only time I have ever been in trouble with the law was giving a man who was sexually assaulting a young girl (I later discovered she was 15) behind a pub a pasting. I was arrested and charged with ABH - and given a 3 month suspended sentence, plus a private audience with the judge, (this was in crown court), telling me that this was all very laudable, but one could not go around randomly kicking the living daylights out of people, no matter what.

Ok. So the next time I see someone having fun and games with a young girl, I'll phone the police on my mobile, and stand there reading the assailant nursery rhymes while the police try to find someone to attend, and in the meantime the guy is getting his jollies.

Yeah right - if I ever saw such a thing again, you'd better book me a place in that same old courtroom.
