Normally you would drive a small car in tests, so here goes:

1. When parallel parking, park up next to the car about half a car length ahead
2. Upon reversing, start turning your wheel a full 360 degrees. Only do this when your side rear window shows the end of the parked car.
3. When knowing you have cleared the car, continue to turn the wheel in the same direction a further half circle.
4. If parallel parking on the left side of the road (which is harder IMO), make sure your body is just further ahead of the parked car upon turn in, and then start to immediately turn your wheel 2 full circles (720) in the opposite direction.
5. Continue to do this until level. If not, continue to turn in.

I'm really crap lol! Its one of the easiest things to do. I guess its more about judgement of the vehicle you drive.

edit: Arghh to slow

Yes, this is how I was taught. If you follow these directions then it will be easy, seriously follow them to the letter...

This is for a car space on your left.

Pull up alongside the car in front of the space so that the back of your car lines up with the back of that car. Leaving about 1" between the side of your car and the other one.

Turn the steering wheel 1 whole turn to the left

Reverse without touching the steering wheel so that the kerb is in the middle of the arch of your tyre in your left mirror.

Then turn the steering wheel one turn to the right.

And then reverse in. And straighten your wheels.

This is hard to write when your not doing it

I learnt another way...I always had blue tack in the back left window and when the back of the car (one in front that I was parking behind) reached the blue tack, aka the back corner of the window, one turn to the right, then reverese, then when the back of their car was in the middle of the front passenger window, one turn to thr right, then looked out the passenger mirror and when you could see their handle 'resting' on the pavement, another turn to the right and carry on reversing.
I liked that wasy because there wasn't really any of your own judging involved...when the car was at the blue tack, you turn!
I'm quite short though and I always moved the seat miiiiles forward and never realised I couldn't see out the passenger mirror, I finally passed my test when I moved the passenger mirror as well as when I moved my seat and I could see out of it so I could see the kerb!!

Does anybody have any advice on how to parallel park on a busy road? This is what i failed on, on my driving test and i may have to do it again.. My parallel park was perfect in the end but apparently i didn't make enough progress but i just didn't know when to move because the road was so busy with traffic.. so i just ended up doing it and made 2 cars stop for me which apparently isnt the correct way to do it? :frown:
Stick your indicator on and stop in the ready to reverse position. Stick the car in reverse so the cars behind you can see what you're going to do. If they stop to let you reverse in, then great. If they go round you, then fine.

Wait till the cars on the other side of the road have stopped or there aren't anymore coming. Once everyone's stopped, boot it and park.

But, i failed my last test because cars had to stop for me? And i was causing an obstruction..even though my observations were really good :frown: I really dont know what the examiner expected me to do?
Sounds a bit dodgy. If the examiner didn't want you to cause an obstruction, they should have waited until there were no other cars around before they asked you to do a parallel park...!

She made me do it on such a busy road! I had no idea when it was safe to do my parallel park because cars kept coming and coming down the road :frown:

I think she picked it deliberately because she wanted to fail me!

this is the way i have been taught, and after numerous attempts i have only hit the kerb once with it

pull up alongside car about a meter away.
reverse until the car is just behind the already parked car.
turn wheel one full turn to the left.
wait until the kerb lines up with door handle in your side mirror.
turn right to get wheels straight adn continue reversing.
when the kerb is an inch from tyre in wing mirror spin to the right.
turn left again when parallel.

whilst doing it it does feel like you will hit the kerb but i would guess i have only once out of around 20 attempts and it always brings you in really close to the kerb without hitting it.
