Lol who said that the chief examiner likes childhood topics? his wife? tbh i dont know how he doesnt run out of questions!!! But thanks for the advice

My Sociology teacher (also the Head of 6th Form) is a Senior Examiner for one of the units so I'm guessing he knows a bit about the guy!

Im also sitting this exam, im ok at it all exept childhood :frown: i understand it all but don't know how i would put it into an essay or evaluate it . Fingers crossed its not on that!

Childhood is neatly structured so it's set out into a few subtopics. After looking at past questions and the spec, we were given a tutorial on:
a) Social construction
b) Position of children
c) Future of childhood
d) Causes of child-centredness

Therefore, if you're able to assess the view that childhood is a social construction and look at whether society is becoming increasingly child-centred, then you can pretty much use the same material. Consider: pester-power, Aries study into Victorian paintings, Factory Acts, improved healthcare, advancements in science and technology, Postman's view on sex in the media, welfare state, nurseries, professions which specialise in children.
You'll be able to use most of those points for looking at how childhood has changed over time, and also looking at the current position of children now.

Good luck!

ah dear doing this retake tomorrow...got a C last year :/ neeed to get like an A or B if i wanna get in to a decent uni!!! Eeeek. Does anyone know if we have to answer the questions in order cause i'm planning on starting with the essay questions but i dont wanna waste time leaving space i just wanna start and do my own order! No clue what tomorrows paper is gonna be on! Praying for social policy or couplessss or childhooood!xx

You don't need to do them in order as long as you number it! I've always done them in order in the past and it's a mad-rush to complete the essay at the end. I think it will depend on how I feel tomorrow afternoon as to which order I do them in!

ooh thats goood cause the two 24 mark questions are worth like half the paper the 2,4,6mark ones aren't that important lol

To be fair, messing up on the smaller questions could be the difference between a grade. Each mark is worth a certain amount of UMS marks which ultimately contributes towards your overall A Level grade. I got an A for AS Sociology in the Summer but I'm resitting Unit 1 to try and get a few extra marks. However you get them, they're important!

What do you talk about family diverisity quite confused, dyu write about functionalism and what the new rights think?

Talking about family diversity is quite a nice question because there's so much you can link it to. So, first I'd look at the different types of family: lone-parent, single-person, reconstituted, cohabitating, nuclear, homosexual, beanpole, sandwich, etc.

These can be linked to a wide range of reasons: changes in the divorce laws, extent of social stigma, changes in female independence, position of children, cost of marriage, increase in life expectancy, welfare tate, secularisation, increase in higher education. If you get a question like this, you're able to look at the whole Family and Households topic and bring it all in to just one question.

Good luck!

WHy do people want social policy i hate that lol theres nothing to write about, remind me what it is?

also , how can i criticise Murock 4 functions , economic, reproductive, sexual and the other one! i need help !!!

Social Policy is just looking at the different laws which have been introduced which affect family life. So for example, you'd say how the Children Act means we're now more child-centred as a society. Divorce laws have made it easier for people to terminate their marriage, hence meaning there's a rise in the amount of lone-parent and reconstituted families.

If there's a theory question, you must always AO2 it with another theory. No theory question ever stands on its own. If we were asked "Assess the extent to which families maintain value consensus in society" - it's obviously a functionalism question. The way to get marks is to look at the alternative views; consider how Marxists believe the family is a tool for capitalist oppression, and the Femenists believe it reinforces the patriarchal nature of society.

Good luck!

Family loosing it's functions (a rough plan)

I'd start with Parson's functions of the family, state how they are still present (provide evidence via studies such as Roberts, Finch and Mason, Wilmott)

Then, I'd contradict these functions. For example, providing more support than any other instution. I'd prove this wrong by using the 'dark side of the family', as well as Leach and Cooper's ideas

Parson's view that different functions have been took over due to industrialization

However, the biggest functions are still performed

Provide an anti thesis of Parson's view such as the welfare state now provides support, by using Wilmott's study, as well as Finich and Masons

I'd then state Murdocks functions of the family, and contradict all his ideas e.g The family now provides an educational role, schools do this.

I'd include feminism and the fact the function of the family is to achieve a patriarchal society. I would then include different ways this is achieved e.g policies, Edgell, Pahl etc

Some suggest it's lost this patriarchal function- include Wilmott and Young's study, as well as the fact it's functions have been lost universally by including some cultural examples (Driver's West Indian families, for example)

I'd then bring in marxism. It's not loosing it's function as it still supports capitalism. Expand on this idea using different theorists etc

Lastly, I'd state the interpretivst view that the family can choose it's own functions by sharing reality etc and negotiating it's own roles.

Well could someone tell me what would be the appropriate amount of pages to right for each question.
As i tend to write slow since my hand writing terrible and get a bit of the shakes .
