Central Saint Martins Foundation 2012/13

For students applying to or accepted in the Foundation Diploma In Art & Design 2012/13

I am an international student, my interview was on 16th November 2011 and i got accepted for Foundation (fashion & textiles), I have completed a Part time Diploma in fashion technology from N.I.F.T Mumbai and the Orientation to Art & Design Course.

Just wanted to know what are the advantages of being a CSM foundaton student and applying for the Degree Course ? also how many students form CSM foundation in Fashion & textiles go on to study the BA in fashion at CSM ? in particular the womenswear course ?

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out ! Also if any students have questions regarding the foundation application, i would love to answer them !
Thanks !

Though Fashion and textiles are in the same department, they are taught separately. Soooo... obviously those in textiles are less likely to get into fashion.
Getting into Womenswear is very VERY competitive, normally fashion students would just apply to as many fashion courses at CSM which appeals to them. When I was on foundation (2010/2011) about 10 out of 90 people from fashion got into womenswear. But many of them will often get accepted to other fashion courses at CSM, so I wouldnt worry if CSM is the place you'd want to study your BA. If you want to stay in london to study fashion, I would also recommend LCF, as they take in about 120 people for womenswear, split into 4 classes, where as CSM has the one class, but they do have other specialisations. If you plan on carrying on MA at CSM and want to specialise at some point e.g. do Printwear or Knitwear, I would advise you to do that at BA level, as my friend was telling me (who is now currently on the Printwear course) that once you get onto MA level that you'll concentrate more on printing than construction (but dont take my word on that detail, because I think that's what he was trying to explain to me, but basically it's easier to specialise at BA)

Haha, I hope that helps a bit!

Hey ! Thanks so Much ! that was really really helpful ! and I was just wondering, the 10 from your batch that actually got into womenswear, did their portfolio like mainly consist of the work they had completed during foundation ? or did they have prior fashion assignments from other fashion courses done prior to foundation ? and was a significant part of their portfolio containing illustrations ? I know these are stupidly detailed questions, but if you can help me out, that will be really nice, and once again, thanks soo much for your earlier reply, it really helped me out a lot ! Also where are you studying right now ?!?!

I dont know if I can answer your questions well enough, because the year I was on foundation, was the year before they changed the format. Also I was in jewellery, and Im currently studying Fashion Jewellery at LCF.
I didnt know the people who did get into womenswear, so I cant really say what their portfolio consisted of. Primarily, everyone would put in the projects that we did on foundation. The fashion portfolios I did see, they mounted illustrations on sheets and included sketch books. but you shouldn't worry about that now, because the tutors will tell you what to do later onwards. The tutors will take time to go through your portfolio with you before you go off to interviews, that's probably the best time to bring any outside work that is higher than A level and discuss whether or not to include it.

Also, if its possible, I'd recommend that you go to the end of year exhibition at Back Hill, because it gives you a good idea of what level your work needs to be. They wont show everyone's portfolios, but you can see which people got accepted into where and what their work is like.

Hey ! thank you !
Well quite frankly you don't have to do anything, Its actually a portfolio review rather than an interview ! The representatives ask for your stuff and they go through it while you wait outside, they read your recommendations and statement of purpose which are extremely important !! especially the recommendations, i mean personally, i got 2 pretty great recommendations, which set the tone, and then your work must obviously exemplify whatever is said about you in your documents. Then they call you in, and jus kind of get to know you and what your all about and unless you say something really stupid and dumb, they will most likely offer you what they decided to offer you looking at your work. But I guess you can get a upgrade in your course or college if your particularly convincing and impressive with your answers. So yeah, that is pretty much it, The 2 people who interviewed me were really nice, and extremely supportive, but sometimes you can get very difficult interviewers, like i did in my advisory, and they were hard to deal with. So kinda be prepared for that. And you get your offer on the spot ! so that's great ! Best of luck !
Hi! I'm sorry if this is kind of spamming.

I know this sounds really stupid. But I am really confused with the application process as I've heard conflicting things from different sources. Please can someone answer my question cause I think I've probably had about 10 panic attacks about this.

I'm an international student and there's NO REPRESENTATIVE IN my country and the INTERNATIONAL OFFICE has not replied any of my emails.

Do I have to
a.)send in my Portfolio with my application
or
b.) I send in my application, wait for a letter of acknowledgement/interview and THEN send in my portfolio?

Also, will I be stuffed if I haven't applied yet, as all these international students seem to have applied already and it says "apply by end of march".

I will be so thankful to whoever answers me

THANKS SO MUCH
THANK YOU

I'm sad to hear about your whole post thing, but i've read about people with similar stories and in most cases CSM was understanding about it if you contact them.

is there any other international students (not from EU) who haven't applied yet???:colondollar:hahahah ok the story of my life forever cutting it close...............
