The Student Room Group

there all very similar!

great city universities, good reputation for history.

I didnt like the course at newcastle, thought it was weird, and i didnt like the fact that you didnt get much (if any!) one to one, and the seminars were going to be taught in largeish groups of about 30.

Not sure if this is the case for leeds and sheffield though so cant say if these are better.

Leeds is a fantastic city, i would have gone to uni there myself had i not lived so close!!

thanks, thats helpful.

Anyone else got anything to add??

Im thinking along the lines of best course, nicest city etc...

I'd say its a choice between Leeds and Sheffield. Sheffield I think has the better History department though city-wise its a hard choice. Both are great places to be for a student, difference is that Leeds is a campus by a city whereas Sheffield isn't a campus, its spread across the city.

Sheffield has a good nightlife...NOT

all my friends who are sheffield have great nights outs, so i guess is all down to personal opinions..

I'd say Newcastle has the best reputation. Just.
But all three are v highly regarded. You could visit all of them and see which one 'feels right', and study the course outlines in more depth.

so if leeds is campus and sheffield isnt, what would people say is the benefits of each of those?

Generally speaking, a campus university means that everything is convenient - you are never more than 20 minutes or so away from accommodation, department, library, social life etc. Especially if you live on campus in halls. So there is not much travelling involved. A city university will be much more scattered over a wide area, you might need to walk miles or take buses from one place to another.
On the other hand, a campus can be quite a way from shopping, cinemas, restaurants etc. and are sometimes a bit claustrophobic if you like to mix with "normal" people.
Newcastle has the best of both worlds as there is a campus but it is right on the edge of the city centre.

wonder why leeds have set me the most difficult grades. Initially i thought that suggest higher stature etc. but perhaps not i guess...

I'd go for Sheffield.

The standard offer for Leeds this year (on their website & UCAS) is AAB, I got this offer as well - although I do believe that somebody on here got a BBB offer from Leeds this year?!

Im leaning towards sheffield...

Personally i'd be happy to go for any. Iv applied for leeds and Newcastle both fantastic uni's in great cities with good nightlife. I dont know too much about the history course at sheffield however i do have a mate there and it is a pretty cool place.

im doin history at newc at the mo.

The city is absolutely fab - great nightlife every night of the week, and the drinks are mega cheap. i honestly doubt that either sheffield or leeds would rival newcastle that much in this aspect.

The union etc is also great - there loads of well run societies and the union itself also runs independently of the uni so is totally based on students!!!

The course is not so good. first year is a bit wack at the mo - all the modules are basically compulsary, and half of them are not what you would expect, especially coming off the back of a levels. they seem a bit like they re the ones that ppl would not normally do so they force first years to do them (eg encounters/identities in world history). basically they arent traditional history subjects. BUT years 2 and 3 offer more variety etc provided you can stick out the 1st year, and that is why i chose newcastle over leeds.

Dont really know that much about sheffield tbh but id say its best in terms of reputation.

(No offence to anyone to begin with)
But has Sheffield really got a better reputation than Leeds/Newcastle?
I honestly had never really heard of Sheffield (the uni, not the town, lol) until I read about it on here! That obviously is my ignorance - but I always thought Leeds was a very good uni!

They are all in the same league, employers are not going to look on them differently, they all ask for AAB (I think) and are all red-brick universities. Choose your university on the course and the city you prefer, they are all of the same calibre.

Personally I'd say Newcastle (not that I'm biased or anything living in Durham). I love the city and the people are on the whole really friendly. It's easy to find your way around and it's about 5 minutes walk from the university to the main shopping street. I wasn't that impressed by Sheffield as a city - a bit too industrialised. Leeds is a nice place but again I like Newcastle much more.
When applying for history I looked at the course at Leeds but was actually put off by the size of the city. I didn't apply to Newcastle because I want to go further away from home and I did apply to Sheffield but it was more to fill the 6th place! SO really, can't help you much with the course!
