Is it true that St Andrews is going bankrupt?

I read on some unofficial guide that it is really going downhill. Apparently they have already sold off one of their halls of residence and are planning to get rid of more. I also read that they are unable to suppliment the extra-curricular societies! Is this at all true?

Just out of curiosity, which unofficial guide was this? I have no idea if what you're saying is true, but I hope not!

they have sold a hall, but I don't think they're going bankrupt.

Does anyone know why they have sold the hall then?

St Andrews is NOT going bankrupt. Hamilton has been sold because the University was offered a lot of money for a building which is undeniably pretty but not remotely fit for purpose; under those circumstances it would have been daft not to have flogged it. No other halls are up for sale.

A huge number of unis are in debt.

I think Glasgow Uni is the worst for that.

Not to mention you get a cracking view of the Old Course.
Comparatively to European universities (French, German, Italian, etc) British universities are very rich and well-funded, hence the bulk of the best universities in Europe being British. Admittedly British universities are nowhere near as wealthy as the top US ivy league universities. Anyway St Andrews meanwhile financially is a lot richer than many other British universities. They’re certainly nowhere near bankruptcy, they did controversially sell one hall because it was worth so much money to developers but I don’t think they’re selling any more.
