Bought after Euro 1996 so 1996 - 1998, I think. Don't know if I'd call him (or any first team regular for the biggest and most successful side in England) particularly obscure, however. Was reasonably well known in the 1990s, became particularly well known after Euro 96. Played a role in a the 96-97 title winning side. Undoubtedly one of the least remembered late 90s Manchester United first team regulars; amongst neutrals at least.

I was going to name one or two signings Dalglish made at his time at Newcastle (destroying Keegan's team) but they're so obscure I've forgotten who they are...

This. In terms of Czech footballers, Poborsky is arguably more famous than Petr Cech and Milan Baros. Not to mention that he has more national caps than either of them.
Marco Boogers was enjoyably nutty.
