8 hours 9 minutes is the average, although ideally 9 hours is best.
Where did you get that information?

I read a study which said people sleeping between 7-8 hours on a regular basis live longest.

Your spine straightens when you sleep, meaning you're tallest when you wake up, and progressively get shorter throughout the day.

The body is most regenerative when you're sleeping, so I suppose it would make sense that in children, a high proportion of their growing is done whilst asleep.

To be perfectly honest though, I'm no expert, so don't take what I've said as definitive.

    Let's get back on topic...

I get, on the average school night, 5 hours of sleep.

Of course, I then go into school looking like I just came out from a mausoleum, and half-asleep...

Mmm...I have insomnia, and a messed up body clock (I feel tired during the day, and energetic at night). Got any tips on getting into a regular sleep pattern?

I do catch up with my sleep during the weekends and holidays, though.
I go to bed at the usual time (say, 2am) and get up at 12-1pm.
