i know this isn't that relevant to this forum..but i'm worried for my health! there is a rat hanging around outside our front door near the bin! we are getting rat poison..but for now are they really that dangerous? are they likley to come near if i go outside?

student accomadation really is dingy!

They will run away as soon as they see anything the size of a human. But they can however, find ways into houses, so you better watch out.
I'll give you a tenner if you get your rat out.
OMG A RAT? run for your life! what if it mutates and becomes an alien rat and then kidnaps you and probes you and throws you into a cage where you have to run on a wheel with 10 elephant sized hamsters??

PS rat poison will do, and its not like you can do mare than that anyway
Be thankful it's not an Arno rat - they're massive (like cats) and leave trails in the banks along the river. I would just go out, but keep an eye out for them inside and make sure you don't leave food out for ages in the kitchen or in your room.

Cool, I can't say I've ever seen a rat... if you could get a photo of it then that'd be entertaining.

Chances are they'll keep coming back if there's a significant dinge factor (to coin a phrase) - but you can have a bit of fun and shoot the little bastard with an air rifle...

It's not really the rat that worries me, more the fact that you have a flat that seems to attract things like that.

its not whats inside the house, its the fact that we've got a tiny lil bin and a house full of people...hence lots of rubbish, that doesn't fit in the bin! grrr....

read The Rats by james herbert

Seriously though, it's student accommodation. Every student accommodation has them, as we students are tramps and can't use bins/dispose of waste properly...

Plus, remember the old wives tale that you are never more than 6ft away from one if you live in a built up area

No, I wish I were in some ways though! I have a friend whose aunt (or some relative) works at the British Institute in Florence and I've been there a few times. I love Florence so much and what makes it worse it that we're currently studying novels set in Italy etc. Ah, I'd give a lot to see Florence, Rome and Venice over Easter. But money is a problemo. Are you at the International School?
