Healthy Eating

Hi Guys
I Have to do an assignment for university based on the general topic of "Healty Eating"
Just wondering if you guys could post your views of the topic.
Especially to these specific statements.
1)What is actually classed as healthy eating?
2)Why the topic is so widely discussed in the present media?
3)How important it is to achieve the right balance of all five food groups?
4)What factors effect peoples decisions to eat “healthy foods” instead of “junk foods”
It would really help me
Thanks Alot!!

to me...healthy eating is a balanced diet ie. three meals a day, with a balanced amount of fruit and veg, carbs, protein, some fat etcc.....

the topic is discussed so much in the media, because so many people aspire to the perfect image that is portrayed by so many celebs eg. nicole richie, paris hilton, lynsey lohan, that olsen twin...who i personally think have taken it a step to far but the medias obsession with it rubs of the people who view these medias.

it is important to have a balance of five food groups in a healthy diet. but been a student this isn't always possible. eg food budget, timeto cook, busy lifestyles etc..., i eat a very balanced diet. however, once my beer googles are on i can't help but have a takeaway which always seems so good at the time, but then regret it the next day. i also allow myself a treat to a treat eg. pringles or some choc.... suppose what i'm trying to say is everything in moderation!!

junk food is so conveinent which makes it so tempting when your in a rush. ready meals etcc...so mayb low fat but are prob far worse because of the high sugar/salt contents.

hope this helps a little

1)What is actually classed as healthy eating? At least five portions of fruit and veg a day and a balanced diet, with equal or near to equal amounts of the main food groups. little or no junk food on a regular basis.

2)Why the topic is so widely discussed in the pres ent media? Because as a nation we are becoming increasingly overweight. More emphasis on adverts is placed on low fat foods and checking the nutritional value of foods. You rarely see junk food advertised these days, but the appeal is placed on low fat, low calorie healthy food. ("This is not just healthy food. It's Mark's and Spencer's health food....") Also celebrities are becoming thinner and thinner (unbearably so in my opinion) forcing the desire for ordinary or overweight people to become thinner by eating healthily etc. A lot of emphasis is placed on the diet of celebs, what they eat to look so good etc, putting increasing amounts of pressure on everyday people in society.

3)How important it is to achieve the right balance of all five food groups? Very important, see 1.

4)What factors effect peoples decisions to eat “healthy foods” instead of “junk foods - Weight loss, and people becoming increasinly health conscious. Skin/hair problems, risk of bowl cancer. etc. I would say weight loss or maintenance is probably the biggest factory though.

questions are a little obvious, but..

1) following a balanced nutritional diet. "healthy" eating differs from person to person according to cultural and personal considerations though.

2) we are mimicking america, and people want to look like stick thin celebs.

3) not actually too much. people often tend to over exaggerate this without understanding.

4) often media. they read silly magazines with ridiculous theories of certain things being "healthy". they choose to follow this "healthy" eating mainly for aesthetical purposes, as well as their health. many people also do it because they think it makes them 'cool' or mature.

the problem is that there exist as many different concepts of "healthy eating" as there are people. Who's right? I certainly don't know, and never will - I cant run my life multiple times with different dietry approaches.

I can say that I think most people's ideas of heathly eating, I find distinctly unhealthy. I can't advise you to take a non-mainstream view in your coursework, indeed you shouldnt - the person marking it wont want to see anything radical or controversial, its best to just parrot government advice.

I think you should make a point of there being different opinions though, and opposition to mainstream advice. Just dont appear to accept it. For actual details and numbers etc, check government websites or something, or just write down what u hear on a flora advert.

1)What is actually classed as healthy eating?
A balanced diet fundamentally rich in a wide range of fruit, vegetables, vitamins etc, with the occasional treat perfectly acceptable in moderation. Not eating excessive amounts of processed food or large portions.

2)Why the topic is so widely discussed in the present media?
Fears of the NHS ending up having to pay for all the associated health problems of obesity.
Britain ending up like America i.e a vast proportion of the population being overweight/medically obese and putting their health at risk.
The health and future of the next generation.
Because many people have well-documented struggles with their weight and the health risks of being overweight are well-known, thus, the saturation of diet programmes/self help books - which of course are all money-spinners too.

3)How important it is to achieve the right balance of all five food groups?
Very important. Studies have shown that the foods we eat influence our appearance, our moods, our general well-being, and our mental health. Yet one cannot live by lettuce leaves alone - the trick is learning to treat yourself in moderation.

4)What factors affect peoples decisions to eat “healthy foods” instead of “junk foods”
Media - supermodels, etc, thats its "cool" to be slim.
Simply wanting to be slim for your appearance and doing it for yourself, not because of what anyone else says you should look like.
Wanting to be healthy.

That's my two cents anyway...good luck with your research
