I thought it was just me , his equations were labeled with (1) then he tried to say that the x was being multiplied by one. I suspect he was going all out to boggle people.

i knew this, interestingly:
(111111111)*(111111111)=(12345678987654321) isn't that neat?

it is actually

I'm not doing maths anymore and my physics is taking most of my time so i no longer pratice my maths skill. All i noe is SHM, rotational dinamic ...blar blar blar...I actually quite dissapionted with my maths skill cos I'm really rubish now. I used to be the best in my class , and probably the best in my year i think :p:

I read the OcUK thread and it was like watching a car crash. Almost painful to read, but strangely compelling, inspiring a sort of morbid curiousity to find out just how dumb it could get.

What's really annoying about discussing this topic is that many people simply can't accept that they are utterly and completely wrong. All of a sudden, everyone's an expert, armed with indisputable 'common sense' and a somewhat dubious grasp of primary-school arithmetic. Increasingly, people seem to hold a deep-seated belief that every opinion always holds some sway, even on matters of concrete logic. If they accept it's not mathematically correct, they argue that perhaps they are right from a 'philosophical standpoint'. If you point out just how nonsensical that is, they'll retort that you are 'failing to see beyond maths' (which would be a lamentable fault if it wasn't for the fact that the whole issue is one of mathematics). Anything to avoid entertaining the possibility that they simply have it WRONG. What's worse, is that they feel justified in their stubborn ignorance by all the crap they've heard about the importance of being 'open-minded' and valuing everyone's opinions, no matter how retarded and incoherent. Though on that point, I remain open to the possibility that it's just down to lead in their water supply or something.

Of course, there comes a point where you just have to give up and leave people in blissful ignorance. But it's damn frustrating.

...Oh my goodness  Unbelievable!
I'm such a Maths nazi. People can believe what they want on something that will have little or no effect on their lives... but even so, I just want to jump on them! :banghead:

For those of you who are gluttons for punishment, or just love watching ignorant fools make.... well, fools, of themselves, the forum which holds the record for the longest, most painful and more soul destroying thread about 0.9r may have just sparked it up again.

Whoever started the thread with that title should be shot, because while it wasn't about the mathematical concept of recurring numbers, it quickly turned that way.

As Dante once said, 'Abandon hope, all ye who enter [url=http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17541008&page=2&pp=30
]here...'

It's almost painful to watch him try to argue that the whole of Maths is flawed, just because he doesn't think 0.9r can equal 1.

Reply 68

In case you're not sure (ie my sparkling form of sarcasm hasn't been obvious) I'm the guy who is actually talking sense in that thread

Reply 69

I'm surprised you have the patience to keep arguing with these sorts of people.

Proof that 0.9r doesn't = 1 :

Assume 0.9r doesn't = 1
Therefore, 0.9r doesn't = 1
QED.

Brilliant, aren't I?

In fact, 1=cheese, as shown below:
Let a := cheese
Then 1=a/a
However much you divide cheese, it's still cheese. Therefore a/a=a
So 1=a
So 1=cheese. QED.

I've never considered myself a psycopath, but reading that thread has given me a compelling urge to kill someone. Preferably someone with the handler AcidHell2, but frankly anyone would do.
