It's seems like it'll be mostly girls who have taken gap years. We'll just have to find some nice younger men I guess.
It's kinda true, I think the majority of people who take gap years are female. But I'm male and I took one. Out of the people in my year of Trevs I'd say that about 40% took gap years, at least.
Out of my group of ~12 close friends, I'm the only guy who took a gap year and then 3 girls took gap years.
It's not a big deal to be honest, you don't really notice too much....though now and then there are little things that make you think that since you've had a year out you're more prepared to be independent (especially if you've spent some of the year away from home) than people who didn't take gap years.
i dont think that'll make too much difference, cos as far as i know if you applied last yr but deferred you still pay the same fees as you would have this year
what u say is true - but what i meant is that this years intake of university students is more likely to have less students that have taken a gap year (ie. gapping this academic year). Thats cos if they wanted to avoid tuition fees they would have not gapped and gone str8 to university - and as i remember there was an apparent scramble last year because of people wanting to avoid tuition fees - maybe that was clearing. But i dont know how pronounced the effect of this will be - dusnt make much difference neways.
Out of the 12 friends I mentioned earlier....5 guys took a gap year and one girl...
I'm sure there are plenty of guys who took gap years, I was just commenting on the coming year and people who have replied to this thread.
I wonder how the top-up fees will affect the number of people having taken gap years... I thought barely anyone would take a gap year but it seems many still have.
I stupidly put an open application in...If I do get a place I bet I'll be put in the new college. At least the facilities will be good for my, I'm sure there will be good access for my stick and zimo. Anyone know if buses in Durham accept freedom passes?

i had a feeling u would be open and then thought there might be the chance you r offered butler- ive applied to butler so if we both get in there at least there will be sum1 we know already who is the same age. not that age is a huge factor but i agree with u on the stick and zimo cos these yunguns full of spice and vigour are tiring.
Wouldn't be that unhappy with Butler... just want to get in! At least I can cook. Really should have bothered to choose a college, ah well maybe the department will pick castle for me... ( I can dream) lol

Glad to know I'm not alone! I'm doing a third year at college (started new A Levels last year - long story!) and will be 20 this October 24th so just after I start at Durham! Oh well as I said at least I feel a little less isolated after reading this thread!
What aspects of your experience have made you think that?
I'm going to be seventeen for most of my first year, so I'm just interested to know.
One of my friends was put forward a year when she was younger and so until February of her first year she was 17. The bar had to have a photo of her so that they didn't serve her lol. However you can go to other college bars/bars and clubs in Durham and get served.
But then, if you're from America I guess you're not used to drinking (legally) anyway! Another few years for you lol!

I just think I could have been a bit more mature, moving to uni was a huge step to me...and I wasnt that used to going out clubbing and making freinds (as id only been 'out and about' for a couple of months, and a couple of times I got in underage before that)
whereas some of the other students who were 19 etc seemed a lot more calm and relaxed.
I didnt find it that hard to move in etc, just maybe would have been better working for a year, then going...getting that bit older and would have been more relaxed etc at uni because of it.
is there any 'prejudice' from the rah's for example towards people who don't take a gap year e.g. do they see you as young and inexperienced or does it not really make a difference to people?
