What degrees did you guys do and from which university? I'm considering going into Shipbrokering with an economics degree from Lancaster and then a Masters from Oxbridge or maybe the Shipping and Finance masters from Cass. I'm just wondering what your academic backgrounds are like that have brought you thus far. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I'm hopefully going to be taking a lot of Mathematical Economics modules at uni which should boost the Maths requirements (as it seems to be a big part of the job), and fingers crossed I'm going to get some work experience at an IB or possibly even as a Shipbroker during a placement year etc.

Shipbroking recruits very differently from IB and Consultancy. A degree is by no means required. It's more about who you know not what you know in this industry. I attended an interview a few years ago for one of the top shipbrokers when I was still doing my A-levels.

Unless your going through the Graduate Schemes for ICAP, Clarksons or Maersk, in which case a Degree will come into play.

But for the most part its who you know. The people I'm doing placement with just now don't have degrees, just their ICS/Lloyds Academy stuff. And, of course, you have to be able to drink like a fish.

The markets pretty stagnant just now, so a lot of guys (like me) are just going through the back door routes working operations, and just applying for anything that comes in the meantime.

Also, to the maersk finalists, good luck guys!

A friend of mine graduated with a 1st from one of the few UK universities, which offers a degree in maritime business and he could not get a job in this sector. AFAIK he was even the best student in his class, speaks 4 languages, other impressive ECs and still nothing. In his words, you need connections more than anything else to get in, pedigree does not matter that much.

I have an interview tomorrow for a ship broking role, i have been a physical oil broker for last couple of years, during my time i developed a keen interest to get into shipping especially ship brooking, is there any tips any one can give on types of interview questions i may get? the role i have applied for is from a junior to mid level position due to my industry contacts

Hey everyone,
I have been invited for an interview for the Maersk Broker programme in Denmark next week with presentation, another logic test and a brief individual interview.
Has anyone gone through that recently and got some tips for me?
What kind of questions will they ask and how was the overall impression you had about the company?

Many thanks

Hi!

I have been invited to the Copenhagen office as well.
What type of academic background do you have? I am also very curious about the logical test.... or just overall excited about the whole process and how many I am 'competing' with.

Congrats. Guess, I'll be seeing you on Monday then
I assume the test will be the same as the online test, just at their office?!
And if there is a presentation + test + individual interviews of about 15 minutes, I reckon not more than 20-30 people due to time constraints. Except if they have multiple interviews at the same time, then we might have more competition :/

And I am currently finishing my Master in Innovation Management. Not very much to do with Shipping  What about you?

Unfortunately, there's a second day! I'll be meeting up at Tuesday :/ was first invited on Monday, but called an asked if I could come Tuesday instead..

Are you studying on CBS? And are you a male?
I hope everything goes well for you on Monday!

I hope it's similar to the online test.. What will you wear, btw? Thanks again!!

Has anyone heard back from Maersk Broker about getting through to the final interview yet? I sat the assessment centre in London a couple of weeks ago.
