I got this of some website. about how to protect yourself from a potential rapist. it was a american website but its bound to be applicable everywhere and will hopefully raise awareness.

The truth about rapists! Tips from a Rapist - A Must Read

***Please read this and pass.............very informative***

A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1) The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.

2) The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women whose clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3) They also look for women on their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4) The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in the early morning, between 5 and 8:30 a.m.

5) The number one place women are abducted from/attacked at is grocery store parking lots. Number two is office parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms.

6) The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don't have to worry about getting caught.

7) Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a
3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years

8) If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time consuming.

9) These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands. Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.

10) Several defense mechanisms he taught us are: If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk, I can't believe it is so cold out here or we're in for a bad winter. Now you've seen their face and could identify them in a line up, you lose appeal as a target.

11) If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

12) If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes), yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.

13) If someone grabs you, you can't beat them with strength but you can by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh -- HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it hurts.

14) After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy's parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you'll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, & he's out of there.

15) When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

16) Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don't dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel a little silly at the time, but you'd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

AFTER YOU READ THIS, FORWARD THIS TO EVERY WOMAN YOU KNOW. IT'S SIMPLE STUFF BUT IT COULD SAVE HER LIFE.

If you have daughters, sisters, even your Mother please share this with them

Just some good stuff to know. Stay safe ladies.

here is some far more interesting infomation.

Women are alot more worried of random violent attacks than men, however,

Men are 10 times more likely to be a victim of one.

Yes, that's TEN TIMES!!!

and it's random (unprovoked) violent attacks, so we're not talking drunken brawls here.

Women are worried about date-rape drugs such as rohypnol, chloroform and other such substances when the most commonly used drug is alcohol.

Yup, but men are a hell of lot less likely to be raped and that's what women worry about most.

ah yes, the golden rule of rape: find a victim with a ponytail. if a females hair is down or in any other way you will become invisible to rapists! remember to keep your hair down on those walks alone in the dark ladies!

Well that's quite specific. Rape or sexual assult being a violent crime.

I'm not sure I really understand the point in your post, I wasn't saying women are safe to walk around in dark alleys in the middle of the night in miniskirts (or wear the're hair in fashion which attacts rapists -silly email, post thing ) just that it's ironic that while women actively take sensible precautions to stop themselves being attacked, Men on the whole don't care happily walking down alleys and sleeping in bushes and what not.

The study I read said that men worry more about being attacked than being raped, and as you said, women worry more about sexual assult. However, a woman is much much less likely to be sexually assulted than a man is beaten sensless. Yet generally it never occurs to men to be cautious when walking around at night.

People worry more about what they perseve is more likely to happen, so, in reality, men are equally scared of being raped as women are (ie. if they were about to be raped they would both be crapping themselves the same amount, and the emotional effects are also very similar), but are less worried because they believe it is less likely to happen.

There is so much about society and gender that can be taken from this one example it's insane, believe me, I've writen about 4000 words on it,
Place a cork in certain places to avoid rape.
Essence of skunk is a good way to avoid being raped.
Just douse yourself with it daily.

Dousing daily is not always necessery, depends on the persons natural aroma.

Note that carrying pepper spray in the UK will result (if caught) in you being charged with carrying an offensive weapon.
yes, I was going to point out how american that website was - 3-5 years for rape - surely it's more here.

That's right! Deter rapists, but encourage wild coyotes and wolves!
That is very similar to an email I recieved for women on how to protect themselves, including things like...

If you are trapped in the boot of a car then kick or punch the back lights and wave your hand through to attract attention of people driving behind.

and

If there is a suspicious looking car parked next to yours on the drivers side, get in to your car via the passenger side and climb over.

Some of them seemed quite viable, but most of them sounded like crap. It's scary how people can just make these up and spread them around!

Please note that this is just a spam email. It is all nonsense. Many of the UK magazines have run articles on this, and

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE

It is far more sensible to try to avoid risks than to think you'll be safe as you haven't got your hair up or whatever.
If you're gonna be raped (girl or boy), sh*t yourself... I think you find you lose most of your appeal then...

So all we have to do is;
* Cut all our hair off
* Wander round in 12 layers of clothing
* Wield an umbrella
* Yell 'STOP! STAY BACK' and "I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY" continuously whilst holding our hands infront of us
* Make small talk with potential rapists along the lines of "We're in for a bad winter..."
* Avoid toilets.

Marvellous. Just marvellous.

“54% of rapists were current or former partners or boyfriends of the victim and only 17% were strangers.”

I know this but the percentage is shocking
