SAD (Seasonal Affection Disorder)

Has anyone purchased a ray-emitting SAD 'thingy'?
- as in a rays transmittor i think it is. My cousins have something along this line and said it has helped, and yesterday it was so nice, for once sun was out, rather than always blocked out due to cloud, sun did pep me up, and in winter months you no doubt feel the effects of less sun, warmth and so on - vit d deficiency i think? It's hit me harder this winter because in September i was in India, temp occasionally reached 42c, rarely below 28-29c so it was lush and felt very good for it. Also, what dangers (health) are there regarding these SAD devices?

If so, have they helped, how much did it cost you, where did you buy it from, how much do you feel you have to pay to get something of the adequate quality?

Thanks...

Ah, my head of year was telling me about a student in year 13 who had terrible depression so had to put her A levels on hold until it got better, and it was because of SAD, i think she said something along the lines of she got it free from the NHS, but had to pay for something or another, but wasnt that expensive, also she couldnt stop using it in the summer, even though it's sunny and bright she still had to go on the transmittor thingy, helped a lot though apparently
A good alternative is staring into the bathroom light for 10 minutes when you get up...well not good, but less expensive
does anyone know of any reputable website/shop in which to look for a light box?

Any offerings of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

We've just done this in psychology... The light box is side effect free, and you are supposed to sit in front of it for an hour each morning which stops melatonin being produced and phase advances the body. (SAD is thought to be similar to jet lag as you phase delay and go out of time with the environment due to increased dark.)

And staring at the bathroom light wont work - the light has to be as bright as day light!!

humans have lived on this planet, and in this area of the world in particular for tens of thousands of years. do you really think that our bodies get that confused by the basic seasons?

I would say that in a case such as SAD, it is a real disorder caused by some faulty wiring in a tiny tiny minority of people. but as the 'treatment' is non invasive, non-pharmaceutic and non-harmful, docs are much more liable to label people with it who are, in essence, just suffering your standard winter blues.

winter blues are normal - its cvold, wet and dark all the time.
don't confuse that with a serious psychiatral problem.

John lewis sell a really rubbish cheap one for 7 pounds which i wouldn't buy because it's cheap nasty and ugly but for 7 quid what do you expect. But they do sell some rather good ones from about £50 (clock alarm big light) upwards to about £150 (clock alarm radio cd player sounds of nature  ) which work properly. Days are starting to get longer now though so it's not so essential frankly
I think they're quite useful i got quite depressed this winter because i work in a basement so there were days where literally i would not see any sunlight. But then i started bringing in my lunch and eating it outside and i felt a bit more cheery.
Well not having sun has hit me this period. I was in India for all of last September and temperatures were hitting 42c at times, so to come back and of course coming back to cloud cover day after day after day....you do generally feel much healthier with more sun, well, i do anyway - my skin looks so much better and so forth.

I havent diagnosed myelf with S.A.D nor has anyone else btw, but i realise the significance of sunlight and the pep me up it gives you, so i have decided to invest in one of these light boxes - i think it'll be particularly useful these next 3 months as i will be very busy, spending long periods of time in my bedroom doing essays in my final yr at uni. And of course, my family can try it and use it if required.
