Ankle pain :(

Ok, here's the deal. I do Karate, and a few weeks ago after training I got home, took my trainers off and had dinner. By the time I'd finished eating, my left foot had swollen up to the extent that I practically had no gaps between my toes. I could put weight on it, but it was mega sore and mega swollen as I've said. I really can't think of anything I could have done in class to mash it up, so I just put some witchazel on a pad of cotten wool and strapped it up. Went to bed, had a relatively normal day the next day, limping slightly. Took the bandage off the next night and it swelled up again hugely.

Left the bandage off it that night and by next morning it was literally back to normal. Utterly odd.

Now, that was a few weeks ago, but at class on Wednesday night, during the warm up it kind of 'panged' and I had to stop 'cause it was really hurting me. Since then it's been a kind of dull ache, but not really any more swelling.

I still can't think of anything I could have done to it to mash it up and I don't really know what to do!

Anyone got any advice for me please? lol

Get an X-ray for peace of mind.

Is it possible to have broken something and still be able to walk on it though? I thought that I'd be rolling around on the floor in pain lol. Most footballers are if they break a bone in their foot lol.

I'm not a doctor and i don't think anyone is here. But swelling is a symptom of a break, could be other things too. It depends where the break is, if it's not in a place where a lot of weight is placed it may not be so painful.

As for footballers rolling on the floor, don't take any notice - they're a bunch of girls with seemingly super-human healing powers.

You can still walk if it's a small bone.

I broke one of the minor bones in my ankle and was still able to hobble into A&E (although it did the healing no favours) so I'd get it checked out ASAP.

If you just leave it be, there's the possibility it may never fully recover

Yeah I'm aware that non of this advice is in the slightest 'professional' lol - I'm just wondering if it's happened to anyone else and if it has, what they did about it lol.

Mmm, I'll go round the hospital some time soon then. Oooh, hope I've not done anything too major to it :s-smilie:.

LOL - Aaah, but you're forgetting the magic healing powers of the 'magic sponge' and the can of deep heat that the medics seem to rush on with and dab all over their injured limb once they've stopped rolling along the pitch in agony lol. Gotta be something in that! lol.

Oh arse. :s-smilie:.

Did you have to have your foot put in a cast and all that?

Were you doing any practice sparring in the lesson? Maybe it got hit then, and you didn't notice. Or were you practicing kicks? That could have caused some kind of sprain. I mucked up my ankle from doing a really bad roundhouse kick one time.

Maybe try exercise the ankle gently, rotating clockwise/anti-clockwise. Also, when you're sitting down, try and make sure your foot is elevated about your heart. Soaking your feet in cold water might also help. That said, as it's still aching after a while, maybe it's a good idea to see the doctor.

Out of interest, what style of karate do you practice? I'm a Kyokushin girl, myself.

Yeah we were, and as it goes - I took a pretty bad knock to my thigh from it colliding with my sparring partner's shin bone when we both went to kick at the same time. The bruise is still fading. But still, nothing as far as I'm aware connected with my ankle.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll take myself down the A&E tomorrow at some point just to be sure.

I practise Zendo Kai  I've not heard of your style, then again - there are so many out there! how long have you been learning it? I love doing karate - do you find that when you tell people they ask you to demonstrate it? lol. I think it's a great way to be able to defend yourself too.

Oooh, shouldn'tve got me started - I could go on about my sport for ages, I love it so much lol. See the 'Sports' thread for more haha.

Edit: Just rolled it gently to the right - I take it that the slightly 'clunky' noise and feeling isn't a good sign? :s-smilie:. Bugger.

I was given a choice but my silly blokish tendencies led me to decline that offer. I really should have had it in a cast, though, because I couldn't walk properly for a month almost :frown:
Well, after 3 hours' at the hospital, mainly waiting to see a GP (who felt my ankle and didn't even suggest an x-ray), the conclusion is that I've buggered up my tendons. Grrr.

Aaah well, an ankle support for a few weeks and it'll be alright I guess.
