I think I'll apply to Talybont South and University Hall. I'm concerned that they did not actually let of see any of the accommadation during the open day, whats have they got to hide? I really, really want to be placed in University Hall, the setting is looks gorgeous, does it just look good on paper, or is it a cool place to live?

WOW someone who wants to live at Uni Hall. That is not to say it is bad but people usually have to have had lived there for about a month first in order to grasp how great Uni Hall really is.
I just wish I was there now rather than stuck in engineering building till 3am writing a formal report.

(Ty Gwyn all the way –living in the white house)
What do you guys think of Gordon Hall?
I know that there are people living in the halls and that you cannot have people just walking in all the time, BUT all the other Universities I have visited let us have a look. I would not mind doing it myself, I've got nothing to hide.
I really like the look of University Hall, hope I get in, but by the sounds of things it doesn't realy sound like an impossible dream.

I don't really like the sound of Gordon Hall, seems a bit quiet and residential. Good location though, close to the city centre and union with ensuite facilities.
(Love the fact that I'm giving advice on something I know nothing about.)
Hey... Just got my "A Guide to Living in University Residences" Booklet from cardiff and saw that there's only one catered accommodation and thats for females only  any reason why there isnt any more? Cardiff wants us to be more self sufficient? I know there's evening meals only places but apparently breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

You're going to uni... I'm sure you can manage a box of cereal, some milk and a toaster!
Honestly, self catered is by far the best anyway. You can eat what you want when you want and with whom you want.
Is it worth getting a kettle, iron and toaster or do people just split the cost and share?

It really depends on your flatmates! I don't have any of the above, but me and my flatmates share stuff in the kitchen, so we got one kettle and 2 toasters out. Meanwhile there are like 3 toasters and 5 kettles in the cupboard still in their boxes! And next year my house comes with those things.
However, everyone keeps their iron in their rooms, but I just borrow people's and they don't mind. You could always leave it and buy one if you find you need it (Tesco value irons at £4.99!!)

Are there any medical students at Cardiff at the moment who can reccommend a good residence in terms of location as well as other things such as the social and facility factors? I just got my offer today and Im sooo excited!!

Not many people have talked about Talybont Court...... Interesting. It is nice, the rooms are big and it has a proper en-suite not a pod and the kitchens are massive, great for parties.
Only problem is that you pay £800 extra for what just seems like extra space :/

Did put it as my second choice, though- South for the win!

Plus if you want a roof over your head that is guaranteed to not fall down, don't go for Talybont Court! Right dodgy build that was...

I will second that..... Roof probably wont fall down but I couldnt guarantee the boiler not bursting.... HOOWEVER. The rooms are nice. And there is a fair bit of extra space.
The choice is yours.

I really wish that I had got the opportunity to look around the accom a little bit more but I was only there for the departmental open day and therefore it was just the bus tour around Talybont which really doesn't help too much.

Got a friend in Talybont Court I think he likes it there, not had too many problems so far I don't think.

Argh, I wish they replied to us now and told us what accom we are going to be in. I hate the fact that we have to wait until Aug/Sept to find that out. Oh well...

just wondering really, are there smoking and non-smoking halls/rooms. preferably i wouldnt like to smoke inthe bedroom as it would stick on the bedding, but i wouldnt (even if i could) smoke in a communal area where non-smokers also live as that is harsh, so i was wondering if you got the option of a smoking hall or non smoking hall, and if not, by last resort can you smoke in your bedroom. please dont flame me for smoking, i am a considerate smoker :P

I'm in Talybont South, and at the beginning of the year you have a form for your flat to turn it into a smoking flat. If everyone in your flat signs this form then you can smoke in the kitchen. However, none of us smoke, though most people smoke when they've had a bit to drink, so as long as you do it out the window its fine.
There's no smoking in the bedrooms, but I think lots of people smoke out the window too.
Lots of smokers just go sit on a bench outside, out stand outside the main door to the building.
But in general, there are no 'smoking/ non-smoking' halls I don't think.

Hey, im currently in my first year at Cardiff, and im in Gordon Hall which is really central to everything. I have internet access, parking spaces, an en-suite bathroom and the option to have evening meals. Its brill. Also lots of my friends are in Sengenyth Court which is near to Gordon Hall, and they have the same facilities. I do have friends in Talybont but they really dont like it there. Talybont North is not good as it doesnt have internet access and really is quite a long walk away. The worst is University Hall though- dont go there! Its where everyone gets put who puts Cardiff down as their reserve choice on their UCAS form, and its really a long way out from the main campus- my friends who live there can only get to and from there and the rest of the uni / city centre via the bus, which is really annoying if they want to come out to the union at night, as they have to still rely on infrequent buses.
