HELP! LPC Offers

Hi,

I've got offers from
1) College Of Law, York
2) BPP, Leeds
3) Nottingham Law School (put them down as a joke thinking i wouldn't get in, can't believe i did)

Im confused on whether to go to york or to nottingham............if i go to york i can live at home and save money, but if i go to nottingham would that give me a better chance of getting a training contract?

Im in my final year at sheffield hallam (i kno im not that brainy like alot of others out there) and im aiming for a 2:1.........ive also got expereince from my law clinic module and 2 summer vacation placements at a high-street firm.

Oh and i'd like to go into employment/family/or contract/company law

Please help me ppl!!!!!!!!!!

where do u think i should go?????

thanks

From what I have learnt on this forum ......

Nottingham Law School has a good reputation and a nice social life and there are many people out there who put this down as a first choice.

Also it seems that employers disregard where you obtain your LPC from as long as you pass and have a 2.1. Do you have a TC?

I am not the best expert but assuming you have the money I would choose Nottingham.

CoL claims to offer many streams in their LPC, see if their variations appeals to you.

Wait for some advice by those already on the LPC!!

Good Luck

I'm on the LPC at the moment and how I understand it, law firms don't really mind where you do your LPC as long as you've passed it (unless you are aiming for one of the MC firms, in which case I'd go to BPP). Do you have a training contract sorted? Are you funding the LPC yourself?

Obviously you'll seriously need to consider costs - living at home will make the LPC so much cheaper and you wont necessarily miss out on any of the social life (I don't and I'm living in Herts and commuting to London). Whether you have a training contract or not the costs of living pile up and I'd seriously consider staying at home to cut down on costs.

In terms of where to go, I'm currently at CoL London and chose this over BPP London and Nottingham. All are very good for the LPC but I thought that the CoL seemed to offer a better course for those not aiming to go into strictly corporate stuff (BPP certainly focuses more on the corporate firms). I'm also interested in family, employment etc and so the 'Commerical and Private' pathway suits my needs.

Arghh im still soooooooo confused on where to go!

I'd like to go to york, simply because i'd get to live at home and i'd save money, but then part of me thinks, since i haven't got a training contract.......would going to nottingham give my cv a boost???

But then they say firms don't mind where u do the lpc as long as u pass it!

In your position I dont think it matters- go for the one which suits. The three providers you have listed are much of a muchness, and will be regarded as so by the vast majority of recruiters. Magic Circle firms tend to send their prospective trainees to the same college because it makes it easier for them to (a) keep an eye on them (have heard that A& O trainees on the LPC get a slap from their paymasters just for missing classes!) and (b) make the provider adapt the course to suit their individual needs. To be blunt, you probably dont have much chance of securing a TC with a firm with such requirements. The majority of leading firms outside the MC (Think Cleary Gottlieb, Macfarlanes, Jones Day etc.) dont appear to give a toss where you train.
It is also useful to note that most of the big city firms (if thats where you want to end up) will be slightly reluctant to consider an applicant who hasnt pursued the traditional route. Local firms will probably take where you did the LPC as an example of how committed you are to their area- if, say, you intend to work in York but do the LPC in Leeds, York firms might also be a little suspicious if you claim to have no desire to work anywhere else.
Hope that helps.

Go where you would be happiest - maybe this means living at home so your financial situation isn't as tight?

Firms do not care where you do the LPC as long as you do well in it - this has been repeated by many grad recruitment officers at firms on open days I have been to, pluc the firms I did my vac schemes with, and the firm Im doing my TC with.

Undoubtedly Nottingham gives a lot of help with TCs, but then so does BPP Leeds - they have great links with Leeds firms if thats somewhere you'd like to be ultimately.

I got offers from Sheffield, BPP Leeds and Notts, and Im going to Sheffield. I have spoken to many knowledgable people on this topic, as I was unsure where to take, and they all had the same advice
* look at the electives and see what they offer / what you want to do
* be happy

And I hate to burst your Nottingham bubble, but they were my 3rd choice as well, just used them to fill a gap as was always going to Sheffield or BPP Leeds, and I too was surprised to get in ..... however a friend who is on line for a 2:2 with no work experience / extra curricular / TC and who goes to Lincoln (one of the most poorly regarded uni's in the country for law) has also been offered a place. The rumour is that this year Nottingham are not as oversubscribed and elite as they are claiming on their offer letters  So do what's best for you - don't let the allure of Nottingham cloud your judgement.

Viviki is on the LPC, as is Aimsi, so you could PM them maybe and see what their opinions are

Everything that has been said in this thread is true. You will need to consider the following things when making your decision:

*Can you afford to study other than at home?
*Where do you want to obtain a training contract?
*What electives are you hoping to do? (if you haven't got a training contract, you might consider making yourself more 'marketable' by choosing some of the more mainstream ones)
*Where will you be most happy?

Where you do your LPC will not have much effect on your chances of getting a training contract other than the links the particular LPC provider may have with local law firms. So, seriously consider where in the country you would like a training contract.

Hope this helps

CoL = open book exams.

BPP and Notts = closed book exams.

Make of that what you will

If you have a TC it doesn't matter. If you don't it still doesn't really matter. CoL has an excellent careers service I hear.

It was in Lawyer2b this month that CoL are scrapping face-to-face tutorials completely in all branches - its been running at Chester for a while and isn't going down well apparently, but its still being rolled out across the board anyway.

So all lectures will now be e-lectures - students can download lectures or get a DVD I think.

This would seriously put me off if they were one of my choices ... maybe its a factor for everyone on here to consider?
