Sport Initiations At Uni?!!

Hi there, on the main message board somebody posted about their horrific initiations into a sports club (female hockey) at uni. I am a bit panicky because i enjoy certain sports and wish to continue them at uni, however do all these weird and stupid initiations go on everywhere?

Does anyone have any experience, or relations that do? Or is it another 'myth'?

Bit worried i won't be able to continue my sports, for not wanting to do ceremonies!?

The following report by BUSA suggests that they are recommending the total banning of sporting initiation ceromonies.

BUSA themselves have no power over the Universities to bring this in, but they certainly have some influence, as they want to give British University sport as good a name as possible.

What initiations?

If you read on the main index forum, university sports, a girl is talking about her initiation thing to play hockey.

I really hope Universities do take action, what a cruel thing.

They do have them at Newcastle, however not for all the clubs. I don't think anyone is forced to do them either. My flatmate managed to avoid doing an initiation ceremony for womens rugby without a lot of hassle. not sure what exactly was suppose to happen but it involved nakedness!

A male friend at Cambridge had to row naked, as did some other crews at colleges, mainly the men so ive heard. I dont think it was serious, they were slightly drunk when it happened, but then again naked rowing is common place at some regattas ( mainly ironbridge!!) after drunken parties.

well im not too sure because i am first year and they havent hapened yet - there next term - but i have been assured that they are not as bad as the rugby teams!! it seems like it is just a whole load of alcohol! but if your not into that then they dont mind youdont get chuck off the team or anything!! the way we seem to work it is the initiations are at the end of your time there so its for the third years - so if yours is like that you can go the first two years without worrying bout it!! they really arent that bad!
