Giving blood

Historyhoney here (I know its a different account) just to say I finally gave blood yesturday (I dont know if anyone remembers my threads about trying to ages ago)

It didn't exactly go well - The blood kept on stopping! Eventually they gave up at 300 ml and then I went all red and they made me lie down and put my feet in the air :s-smilie: oh well - 4 months until I do it again...

I was absolutely petrified - it was the worst thing I've done - but it should get easier! I just put on my ipod and listened to bebo norman while watching slide shows of new wine (pictureS) it went on for 20 mins, and felt absolutely horrible (but I think I am a reareity) so go for it!!!!

I don't trust Medics and their needles.:hmmm:

haha I didn't trust her when she said - "now I'm just going to try and manipulate the vein..."

Still - if I have an accident I will feel slightly better knowing the blood I receive was cancilled by the blood I donate

Thank you - I dont really see it as a great thing though, to do a great thing is to do a selfless act, to somehow help someone for no reason or whatever, but giving blood should be a thing everyone who can does, I mean, if we think of our parents and grandparents, I'm guessing almost everyone has one which needed blood at some point... for example without two blood transfusions as a child my mum would have died, and if no one had given blood then their wouldn't have been a little me now, therefore the giving of blood is a debt to society for allowing my mum to live,

The blood motto goes somewhere along the lines of "save a life" but people who donate do more then that - they help "create lives" therefore I think everyone who can should - even if the most petrifying thing is that needle, I mean I can say it was the worst thing I have ever done - but in my opinion it was necessery, am I babberling or does that make sense?

I couldnt agree more. Is it morally right to expect to receive blood when you are not prepared to give it (if you are medically fit to give blood)? Im not trying to get at anyone, but it really does make a difference. When i first gave blood about 6 months ago they told be they had enough blood for 3-5 days. By the end of the week my blood would be used and they would rely on "tomorrows donors".

If it is medically possible to do so.... Do something amazing, give blood.

I would love to be able to give blood but unfortunately I've been told I am not allowed to donate because 2 of my previous partners have been bisexual men who have had sexual contact with other men at least once in their life.

I have been tested for all STDs, HIV..etc and every test has come back clean but I'm still not allowed to donate. V pissed off about it too!

My boyfriend did it for the first time 2 weeks ago, then fainted afterwards! I was so scared cause it was just me and him, I thought he was having a fit. But the nurses were all really nice and helpful  I fed him water through a straw (practicing for when we're at retirement age!)

He got a letter last week though saying 'Sorry you fainted... why not give again?', So, he's going to try again to see what happens. Hopefully wecan prevent the fainting by not moving for a long time afterwards. I'll also be giving for the first time on March 10th

Wish me luck! (i don't want to but I hope to faint too so my boyfriend feels better about himself )

I used to give blood, still think of it as my good deed in this life. But hey can see your problem. Maybe if you don't do any sexual things it a help. Hope you sort it out., Course doing blood is a big part of helping life saving, and some of nurses look so horny wow........

I'm not a man or a lesbian so I probably wouldn't notice that much...but generally when i give blood all the nurses seem to be middle-aged and on the stout side!
Why aren't more fit young men training to become NBS nurses? Or blood donors, i suppose, which they should be doing anyway if they can. But it's harder to see the other donors when you're on the couch and so are they. I want some fit guy ministering to my every need for 10 mins...is that so much to ask? :p:  Would be an incentive for some people and a bonus for those of us who do it anyway!
