The posttown is just silly royal mail rubbish. Altrincham has Warrington as the most code even though its just 6 miles from Manchester city centre and Warrington is 20 miles away.

Although the Heald Green example has SK9 as the postcode I think, SK for Stockport.

It is a bit like London, half it used to be in Sussex and Essex but then they made Greater London in 1974 (or 3) they did the same with Manchester. So towns like Cheadle became apart of Stockport and in turn Stockport became apart of the new Greater Manchester county.

It just annoys me because they live in Manchester when it suits them and they live in Cheshire when they want to sound posh, they cannot have both.
i write lancashire in my address and its actually greater manchester, but i dont do it to sound any different its just because nobody round here EVER puts greater manchester even letters from big companies etc still say lancs. its just a habit that doesnt really need changing

It just annoys me, I get letters that say Lancashire on it some times and I am like WTF, Lancashire is at least 20 miles away from me and in North West geography 20 miles is an awful long way.

This is like observational comedy. Except, not.
My dad used to be a postie and delivered in an estate a few streets away from our house. We live in an OK area, with a v.posh one and v. nasty one on either side. The nasties would put the posh area in their address and to hack them off he'd cross it out and put a big arrow and the word "NOT" next to it lol.
Some people still put my address as

*Street name*
*Village name*
Derwent Heights
York

The area hasn't been called Derwent Heights for years and years!

Mind you we had the whole Humberside/East Yorkshire fiasco a few years ago-they couldn't decide what to call us!

At first we were East Yorkshire, then we changed to Humberside and now we're back to East Yorkshire.Pfft.

Personally I think we should be N.Yorks as the village address is 'York' area even though we aren't in the same county-it's frustrating as it means I can't get a York card to get a discount on council facilities.Grrr.Even though it's my nearest(and most accessible) city!

my brother says he lives in Southsea when he really lives in Fratton
My home town address has always historically been followed by Sheffield. But since the 1970s all the boundaries in the area were changed and the town was then administratively put under Barnsley, however everyone always still used Sheffield in the address instead of Barnsley as that is what has always been done and, I believe, always will be done.
I want to do it  What would London be?

Just fond out which historic county (eg Middlesex or Essex or whatever which all used to cover the whole of London) your bit of London is in and then use that in your address and miss out any reference to London at all...unless you live tight in the centre in The City of London that is....

Depends exactly where you live. If you're on the south side of the Thames you're in either Surrey or Kent. If you're on the north side of the Thames you could be in Middlesex, Hertfordshire or Essex.
Everyone from Manchester pretends to live in Cheshire! Its because its the best place to live. I have an SK Postcode, but its definitely not stockport, its east cheshire and edging onto Buxton.

Is Middlesex still a county in its own right, or is it all just Greater London? sorry, but does anyone know?
http://london.openguides.org/index.cgi?London but http://www.london.org.uk/indexmcd.html

It seems to be abolished but it doesn't stop people calling parts of London as Middlesex like Ashford etc.

Ashford
I thought that was in the middle of Kent
Old news really, but a bit relevant: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2668561.stm

In one way they still exist and in another way they don't.

In the 1970s when the big change occurred it was said that the traditional and histroic counties would remain and that the new boundries with new counties and some abolished ones were for administrative purposes only while the other counties would still exist and old boundires would still be the same for otyher reasons.

Over time it looks like people have forgotten about the old county boundaries as there is really not much reason to use them.

Though I think the people who said the old counties weren't being abolished were probably just saying it to appease those opposed to the changes, I really see no reason why we shouldn't still use them....hence why sometimes I feel inclinded to put my address down as the West Riding of Yorkshire, rather than South Yorkshire for my parents address or use East Riding of Yorkshire (or even no country at all) in my York address instead of North Yorkshire.
