Fat contents of food

So, I always look at calories but am thinking I should look at fat contents too. But there about 4 different figures! what do they mean? which ones should you look at?

e.g my bag of crisps

Per 25g bag

Fat 8.9g
of which saturates 1.1g
of which mono-unsaturates 2.1g
of which polyunsaturates 5.6g

What do all these mean? which one do i look at? is this bad?

i think polyunsaturates are bad fats

Reply 2

Saturates are bad fats, not too sure about the others.

poly-unsaturates are so called "good fats", usually plant in origin.
saturated fat is termed "bad fat" and is thought to increase levels of "bad" cholestrol. But basically look at the total fat content if you want to lose weight, pay attention to the saturated fat if you want to prevent heart disease? I suppose.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure its saturates too.

Yeah, saturated fat is supposed to make up something like 20% (maybe less?) of your daily fat limit. Get good fats instead from nuts, seeds (particularly pumpkin and flax) and soy milk. Saturated fat (saturates) are found in abundance in processed foods, meat, crisps, junk food, etc.

Submarinal butter is the most unhealthy.... followed closely by farmyard lard

Yeah, I did mean to put butter in my post, but it somehow slipped out...

yea, in PC nutrition, saturated fats are bad and polyunsaturated are good. Alternative (indeed, opposite) views exist.

Looking at (and presumably decresing) fat content is not neccessarily going to help you lose weight.

Agreed. Losing weight is a combination of healthy eating, exercise and willpower.

well, I mean assuming other aspects are set up well, decresing fat intake --/--> decresed bodyfat

monounsaturated is considered the healthiest out of them, as it has none of the adverse affects from saturated. polyunsaturates are second and are better than saturated (doesn't raise cholesterol, in fact it can lower LDL and HDL, which is sort of good and bad. highly caloric too.). then you have saturated fat, which of course is a bad thing and should be avoided if possible. another thing that isn't mentioned there but is even worse than saturated is trans fat, which has no positive effects whatsoever and a lot of negative ones.

but looking at the fat content won't help you too much, there is a lot more to it.

Please, anyone who thinks they can lose weight just by switching to a "Lite" bag of crisps and a "Diet" coke, don't!

I really miss crisps. I always make my own now (using no fat atall, just cooking a thin sliced potato) but i do have a thing for diet coke. Always have done, real coke is horrible.
I'm losing a little big of weight but admitedly there has been more to it than just those things.
