What opticians would you recommend?

I have never had an eye test, apart from the ones you get when the optician comes to your lower and middle school...I've had no problems with my eyes at all (they often get red and watery, but that's usually when I've been in a smoky place) but I think it's time I should get them checked out!

Question is, which opticians would you recommend? Boots, Specsavers, Allders? There's so many and I haven't got a clue which one to ring up!!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/experiences!

I use a local one for my glasses and they've always been fine. Bizarrely though, I get my contacts through Dolland & Aitchison, who are great on that part of the service but their eye tests are bloody expensive! (£25 a time!)

Edit: I should say it won't really make much difference - the standard eye test is the same everywhere so as long as you have someone qualified doing it, it doesn't matter. You can still buy glasses and contacts from other opticians provided you have a printed copy of your prescription (I bought my last pair from Boots when they had a sale on)
I don;t think I need to worry about paying at the minute, because I'm under 19 and in full-time education...

I'm thinking of going to Specsavers as it's the nearest one to me! I really need to go, because if there is a problem with my eyes I haven;t got a clue how long I've had it!!!
I used to go to the local no-brand opticians and they were great (free eye tests coz I was in full time edu etc)

But glasses are FLIPPIN EXPENSIVE I was paying like £100 for frames coz I need really tough ones and coated lenses and things (I used to ski and I work in a kitchen where they get full of grease and skank!)

So now I go to specsavers where its BOGOF on the frames, AND extra 20% off for being a student AND they give me free tough coatings on the lenses!

I got 2 pairs last june - one for going out and one for everyday - but i've hardly wore the going out ones coz the everyday ones are great! I throw them around everywhere, they NEVER go in a case and there isn't a mark on them!!
Well I've just rung up Specsavers and got an appointment for 11am on Thursday with a newly qualified optician... Her appointmets will last 40 minutes instead of the usual 20 minutes, but I'm not that bothered about the time...as long as she can tell me any problems with my eyes I'll be fine!!!

Cheers for the suggestions!

I'm in the same situation as you, haven't had my eyes checked in years, didn't know where to go, etc. Got an appointment at the closest... Specsavers! Then I found this thread, kinda funny. Although, my appointment is on Sunday (I didn't even realise they were open on Sundays!).

Hehe...I really didn't have a clue where to go, because no-one in my family has had regular eye tests! I chose Specsavers because they were closest but also because I know there I will definitely get the test free!

I've heard many people who find the glasses too expensive get their prescription from Specsavers, then go on the internet to buy their glasses...I think it might be from this website... http://glassesdirect.co.uk/release_000/index.htm Glasses for £15!

Specsavers def best iv been to. Avoid optical express unless you wana pay way over the odds.
Boots, especially for contact lenses.

Vision Express or Specsavers...
Only problem with buying online is that you can't see if they look ok on you...

My local specsavers were really rude to me! I went to Optical Express and they were lovely. They test your eyes more throughly as well x
