I went to college in Winchester (Peter Symonds) and the city itself is truely lovely. There are some gorgeous places. I'll miss it.
Ok, obviously here is the place to be.
Hey, I am going to do American Studies. Was gonna' be Creative Writing, but am happy with my final choice. Not too happy with my student accom. and might try and find a flat share, if not I will just lump it I guess. I'm also 25, so a mature student...
Hey I'm also going to Winchester to study Law!!

It's weird to think it's only 18 days away. I got my student accomodation (and have dutifully filled in the forms... kinda confusing.) and am in west downs ensuite (yey!) which i'm pleased about.

Though I think I may just drown in the paper work before I actually get there.

Is anyone else slightly confused about why they have made the move in days during the week? I don't drive and so my parents are having to have a day off work to get me there. Since I live about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away it's not even like they can have a half day.

That and freshers week starts monday, so how does that work when many dont arrive until late monday, tuesday and wednesday?

I've also got my course books (slightly painful spending that much on books i just know I will probably use only a handful of times for some of them).

What about everyone else? How do you feel about this?

You have course books? when did they tell you what to get?

Hiya!

Vicki- I'm doing primary education so when i went to their page it had PDF files that sowed you which showed the coursebooks under general information (you weren't told you HAD to buy them but they were named 'key texts' and since I don't want to have to fight others for them in the library I figured I might as well get them myself). There were also some recommended texts which I looked through before deciding which ones looked more important.

You could always go to your course on their web site and see if their is anything similar. I doubt you have to buy them just now, but I wanted to gt as much out of the way as possible. They probably tell you at the uni which texts are more important to buy and most will probably wait until then to buy them.

Crazyamy - YEY! Someone else doing primary education. What subject are you taking with it? I'm in west downs house 98.

:woo: Brilliant!!! I'm doing special educational needs what are you doing?
have you already done your 2 weeks works experience?
Reply 229
I really considered special educational needs but ended up doing english.

I've already done my two weeks and filled out the questions and observations, I ended up doing more than two weeks, but only because this year I had a Gap year.

It was really fun though, have you done your two weeks? If so did you enjoy it? How do you think they arrange the lectures? I've been wondering whether they will keep the subjects seperated, though the subjects themselves don't actually appear to be a large part of the course.

17 days and counting. :s

I've been wondering about how they seperate us, it might be something on the lines of all going in the lecture because theres no point in doing the same lecture twice then going into are subject groups? I don't know when we start with the specialisms....i guess we'll have to wait and find out!

I did my 2 weeks at the end of the last school term, after a few days in foundation I decided after one group task where one boy couldwas a bit more structure. I got on really well with the year 4s which surprised me I n't/wouldn't recognize that Cat started with a C sound and he was an older child for the class there was no way I could do that for 40 weeks of the year there too little and hard work I preferred where there didn't think I was too good with older kids (especially as most are taller than me!) but once i got to know them they were really nice and you could have a propper conversation with them!

What books have you been looking at there are 100's!
Reply 231
I know what you mean, Anne Fine's books are very very popular with 5-6 as well as some of her younger ones for the 3-4 as well as Michael Morpugo's, Gene Kemp was also popular in key stage 2... and the dreaded high school the musical (drove me nuts), there wer loads. I only spent 5 days in with keystage 1 but they mainly focused on the stage books with a few Dr. suess thrown in for good measure

I'm already positive I want to teach key stage 2 though, what about you, which key stage are you leaning towards?

I totally hear you on being shorter than many of the year 5-6's, I taught 2 boys keystage 3 maths and they were both taller than me... and the buggers kept on growing.

Though, I'm 5'2, so it's not like it's too hard to be taller than me

What about you, what sort of tasks did you do with the children? Did you like the teachers you worked with? Are you looking forward to doing the placements (though i dont think they start til year 2) ?
Reply 232
not forgetting Jacqueline Wilson aswell!

I'm not sure what key stage I want to teach (as long as its not foundation!) I haven't had a lot of experience with Yr 6's, I work at an after school club the older kids I don't really have much confidence with the older kids! Anything between Yr 1-4 I'll be happy with!

I did quite a bit I went to the the primary school I used to go so I knew a couple of the teachers. With foundations it was basically picking a group and chatting to them and asking leading questions to what they've been learning about, I did learn loads there though! I did read a story to both class groups one afternoon while the little afternoon children arrived which was quite intimidating looking up and seeing 35+ little faces looking up at me.

With the Year 4's I was taking guided reading quite a bit which was really good. The teacher I was with was the PE person so he taught me loads about how to change different activities to make them interesting. He had a really good relationship with the pupils they all respected each other and I thought it was lovely! We also did a geography walk round the park near where the school is and I took a group round to say whats good/bad/need improving etc. Although in numeracy I struggled a bit, I find maths difficult and I was helping the kids which struggle which was really hard work I really hope I can get confident with maths and speaking to the class as a whole!

I can't wait to get going! What text books have you been looking at?

The older kids can be quite imposing as they're more independant so they're more likely to question you, but in some ways that can be quite a good thing.

It sounds like you had a fun time in your placements, how long did you do them for?

As for text books, I've had a peek through all of them but no major studying, I absoloutly LOVE collins grammar rules though, it's so much fun and gives me so many ideas.

How are you dealing with the impending arrival of uni? Is this your first experience like this? Are you just out of school or are you a mature student?

Fantstic-what's it like? Do you know how many rooms there are?
Reply 237
I was looking through the welcome pack a few days ago and came across some lectures etc. that are mandatory to go to, does anyone have any clue which pack that is in (there are so many now!).

I'm going to have to make of all of the things I need to do during freshers week because I'm never going to remember it all :s-smilie:

I think there were 7/8 rooms, although one is for a disabled student and has an en-suite (that's the one my friend was in).
It is one the end of a row so the kitchen is a different shape to most other houses, but it's still pretty big.
The only issue my friend had was that the cleaners had a store cupboard in the house and so were always in and out, and also spent their breaks in their kitchen using their kettle etc :frown:.
Im going to winchester hopefully. Ive put it for a deferred entry tho, so i can get some more experience and stuff. Im really nervous. I have an interview in january. - ANY TIPS?

Im hoping to study Primary Education (art) if anyone has any knowledge on this i would love to hear from you.

Any help whatsoever will be brilliant =]

Thankyou xxxxx
