This may sound very stupid, but what is a slone? Is it a fresher?

It's a posh person, with a very typically upper middle class background, who may or may not look down on those who haven't.

Hi

I'm writing this message from Hope Hall. The facilities are great, there are a lot of en-suites, the food is terrible, but worse elsewhere. One downside is its cost. For 2004/5 it will be between £105/115 a week .That includes all meals and room cleaning, plus free laundry facilities. Everyone who is here either took a gap year or has a medical condition, only a few of them arge genuine. If you want an ensuite just find an unscrupulous doctor to write you a letter. We all did. There are very few 'Sloane Rangers' here. Because the majority have taken a gap year its a much calmer quieter place to live. Yes, in other words it can be deadly dull. However, they don't show you the worst accomodation on the tour, and with a good group of people this can be a great place to live. We are within the boundaries of the campus and actually a lot closer to the main nightclub and the Law, Sociology, History, Politics, Economics, Engineering, Computing and Archeaology departments. And we are closer to town. Be warned we have four annex's, they are large Victorian homes, two are disused at the moment but the other two are a little scabby but the people who live there are so close and happy they wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The other halls in the "Exeter Halls" group cosnsit of people who applied for Hope, a large number of the males go around in their pastel yachting shirts with Pashmina's, but there are a few normal people out there.

Beware of hidden costs, when you get here you have to pay £40 in hall subs for entertainment, £50 for the internet, £25 for an 'Ents' card,£10 or a key for your cupboard and a bit towards your lunch each day (only about £15p though).

Good Luck
If one is in Exeter Uni, is it better to go catered or self-catered?

If it's self-catered, roughly how much do you spend a week on food alone?

And do you actually cook regularly?

depends on what type of person you are..i couldnt have coped with self catered

depends on where you shop...roughly about £10

And do you actually cook regularly?
yes if you have self catered, or you'd die

That's a short, straight to the point answer, thanks.

I was just wondering why you couldn't cope with self-catered. Is it because of the hectic time table, such that there's no time to cook?

Roughly how many hours of lecture + tutorial time there is per week?
I'm sending off my accommodation form on Monday. Choices are:
1. Mardon
2. Lopes Hall
3. Duryard (thought I'd end up there anyway, so what the heck!)

well, i doubt id have been bothered to make breakfast as i would have got up even earlier, lunch would be fine, but Expensive at £2+ a day and although id be home at ~5 most days, i couldnt be bothered to cook, so id just watch telly and go to bed...and more than likely forget about food. so its more to do with being lazy that the timetable.

i get 17 hours a week, but its annoying because they're early mornings 9 and 10 and then last afternoon 3-5 so i have hyge gaps in the middle.

hehe, are there that many 'snobby gits' there? when i've been to the open days etc the people seem really nice and there were not many 'snobby gits' there at all-which is why i've just applied to the halls that I like.

if your trying to avoid them, go for the cheepest accomodation, aviod marden, holland hall, rowe house, nash grove,

try dyryard, kilmorie, south cloiseters (st lukes)

Oh well - i'm sure i'll learn to live with them - i go to school with quite a few "snobby gits" at the moment, so it'll prob be the same (so i'll either avoid them or learn to live with them  ) Are they that bad then? xxxx

yes they're bad. but the ones that realise theeyre snobby are ok...tey dont like you,you dont like them so you just dont mix. the worst ones, the ones that drive me insane are the ones that dont realise it. these are the type who live in dyryard...and they're like "oh im not snobby" and your like "just shut up" grrr, but you cope, you tend to attrach people similar to you in freshers week so you'll just all laugh at them!

the people at the accomodation office are very very skiled in what they do.

its not that bad!

Everyone: Don't get up your hopes, everyone I know (in duryard) applied for mardon, hope and lopes. So don't feel bad if you end up in duryard, Ive had a great year! There is a chance of getting into Holland i guess.
how can people improve their chances of getting into the 'nice' exeter halls then. Everyone seems to say that mardon, hope, lopes, holland etc are all gonna be taken up by those who have gap years. why is this?

I really want to go to holland, anything i can do to improve my chances?
